Did look at these for NORTHCOM. Anti cruise missile operations over the US. Economics were good but didn't fit into the promotional chain. Orders came down to quickly demil those at DM.

Was a request from some folks in Office Sec Def. (OSD). This was around the same time they were looking at the ATF's OV-10s for light air support. The issue was cruise missiles coming from freighters off shore. Lots of A-4s that are easy to fly and maintain. Can operate from small airports so maintain pilot capabilities . Can fly down canyons after missiles. 6-9 months after the suggestion asked what happened to the A4s. Seems that someone ordered the demiling (cut the wing spars) of the low time AC. Guess not enough money to be made.

Skyhawks were mighty handy fighters in the Tonkin Gulf days. When the Mig alarm went off you could see a couple of A4's get launched from the local Birdfarm if close enough. It didn't seem like they cleared the end of the flight deck before going nearly vertical. They got real high real fast. Must have been a hell of a ride.

We have an A4 on on static display in Oriskany, NY, along with the Anchor from the decommissioned aircraft Carrier, "The Oriskany."

This display Skyhawk actually flew off the Oriskany.

Some references are made to a "fire" that happened on the Oriskany; a fire that did not include McCain.

Saw one flying "against" a Mig-19 at an airshow a few years back. The A4 is one zippy little plane. Good thrust-to-weight ratio and great maneuverability. Very hard to spot one until it's almost on top of you.

The Skyhawk has always been one of my favorites. Saw one at an airshow a few years back...very loud!! Certainly a work horse of its day.
