STG-58 Kit Cosmoline Removal

I bought a mint STG kit that is slathered in Hard, dried up cosmoline. The original color fill paint is on the lower, gas plug, regulator, etc...

What is the best way of removing the cosmoline without damaging the red and white color fill paint?
