I just sent an email to all paid competitors with the final match details. Check your spam folders if you don't see it, and if you still can't find it let me know and I'll see what happened. Here's the most important part:

Registration is between 6:30am and 7:30am on the morning of the match. You will sign a waiver and randomly draw your start time. If you do not get registered before 7:30am, you will not be allowed to shoot. Be there.

THAT was a lot of fun!

Pistols and kettlebells...check.

Shoot stuff and run laps...check.

The cave.

Slacklines and dueling trees. It really was clever to put nice people in charge of the slackline.

Shooting from a small boat was surprisingly satisfying.

I sucked on my own stage.

And failed to finish the Jimmy stage by ONE ROUND!

I cramped hard the last mile or so, but still managed to beat my listed last 10k by 20 minutes. Also made the rope climb. Overall a very good day for the stimpster.

Now I have to survive two days of ROing and Jimmy's very existential threat of draining what looks like a 2l bottle of Jameson's.

My favorite quote from yesterday: "those guys at the wall REALLY seem to be enjoying themselves"

Stimp was working the wall.

A 20 minute improvement is HUUGGEE!!!

I might post the pond section if it looks badass.

Too bad we couldn't see his contortions shooting over the starboard side. But it was nice to see that he only needed a couple of extra shots to take them all down. Good job Stimp!!!

While we're waiting on picture processing, I figured I'd start sharing data:

We had 167 total competitors over the weekend: 87 for the 5k and 80 for the 10k. 61 of those were Military (31 5k and 30 10k), and 8 were ladies (3 5k and 5 10k).

90% of the 5k people ran Race Class and 10% ran Combat Class, while 85% of the 10k runners went Race Class and 15% went Combat Class.

We had people from 20 different states represented. The below map shows which states - the bigger the dot, the more people came from that state.

More data: Only 61% of 5k competitors and 66% of 10k competitors provided age data during registration, so this data is a little incomplete. And I struggle a little with how best to show this while both keeping it anonymous and making it so you can see how you fared within your own age group. Here's my best efforts - let me know if you have any better ideas!

Well, I may fare pretty well based on your demographic charts. Seems like all of the old people competed in the 10K and none in the 5K. Since I am already outside of your age ranges, I will definitely skew the charts when I compete in the 5K next year.

And yes I said compete. I have been challenged and the challenge was accepted.

Outstanding - I look forward to seeing you there!

Back to data: 19 hardy souls decided to run BOTH the 5k and 10k - so just for fun I combine their overall scores to see how they all stacked up against each other in the "15k Challenge". Five of these folks (highlighted below) deserve special recognition because they did this as ROs - that means they run their 10k, have 15 minutes to reload and regear, and then immediately run their 5k. And then go out and work their stage for the rest of the day & weekend.

Impressive stuff! Here are the results -

The photos my wife took are now up at https://www.flickr.com/photos/163548...h/32500620447/

As always, feel free to use these however you like, but PLEASE CREDIT LISA STENNETT AS THE PHOTOGRAPHER if you do. Especially if they get used for any commercial function.

There were a few other photographers out on the course, and I hope to have links to their photos here soon. Taking, editing, and posting this many pictures is LOT of work - so please show your appreciation to all of them!

And the last piece of data: the equipment summary. I did collect rifle manufacturer data, but the list was just too long to put into a simple pie chart - it seems like there was pretty much one of everything!

That's a lot of photos - she must have covered a lot of K's herself taking all those. Very cool!

Anyone older than me beat me?

Anyone shooting 308 beat me?

Asking for the wife.

Also, you shot video of my rope climb, is it hideous or triumphant?

Again, Lisa shows her skills as a picture shooter. Freaking awesome shots, pulls the viewer right in with the subject. I kept looking for the targets to spot for the shooter.

Kotengu, are you able to post the course of fire and the obstacles for the race? I would really like to put the what the stage was with the pix.

Ben Wolf beat us both shooting his PTR. I was 2nd .308 shooter with my AR-10. You were top FAL shooter.

A 53 year old beat you (overall combined) by 13%, and a a 59 year old beat you by 8%. Sorry mang!

I think I only took pics of your rope climb, but I honestly haven't even looked at everything on my iPhone yet. Tomorrow starts the picture and video processing on my end now that Lisa's done with hers, so I'll know more this week.

Thanks for the kind words! Formatting is goofy with the cutnpaste, but here goes:

2019 Rockcastle Run N Gun

10k Course of Fire

Stage 1 Obstacle: Barbed wire crawl, mud pits, and tube climb, sponsored by Tactical Tailor

Stage 1: Strong or Accurate?
Doe Valley

Begin with a single steel B/C zone torso target 50 yds away. On the buzzer, draw your pistol and make two hits on the target from 50 yds. Pick up a kettlebell and throw it toward the target. You can either safely holster your pistol and throw it two-handed, or keep your pistol pointed in a safe direction while throwing it one-handed. Wherever the kettlebell lands is your next firing position Ė move forward and make two hits on the target from there. Repeat this exercise once more for a total of three firing positions and 6 pistol hits on the steel.

Safely holster your pistol and carry the kettlebell back to the 50 yd line, then perform the ďX-DrillĒ with your rifle: From behind the barricade, make two hits from the standing position around the right side of the barricade (right shoulder), two hits from kneeling around the left side of the barricade (left shoulder), two hits from kneeling around the right side of the barricade (right shoulder) and two hits from standing around the left side of the barricade (left shoulder).

Total hits required: 6 pistol, 8 rifle
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized

Stage 2: Magpulís Improvised Support
Cowboy Town

Begin in the barn, with three targets at 40-50 yds Ė stage is all rifle. On the buzzer, drop to prone on a wobbly platform. Make one hit from the right shoulder around the right side of the cones. Make one hit from the left shoulder around the left side of the cones, and one hit in the center between the cones. Put the rifle on safe and set it down facing downrange, then run 40 yards (out and back). Retrieve your rifle and move to the car door, where you will repeat the right, left, center pattern using the car window as a support from approximately kneeling height. Safely ground the rifle and run another 40 yards. Make one hit from the right shoulder using the right side of the barn opening as a brace. Make one hit from the left shoulder using the left side of the opening as a brace. Make one hit using a strap strung across the opening as a brace Ė all at approximately standing height.

Total hits required: 9 rifle
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized

Stage 3 Obstacle: Drop your rifle (and pack if wearing one), and navigate the stepped balance beam down the hill to the cave entrance. If at any point you touch the ground, climb back to the top of the hill and start over.

Stage 3:
Cave

On the buzzer, move forward through the cave and use visual cues to determine which targets to shoot. Put three hits each on appropriate targets to neutralize.

Total hits required: 15 pistol
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized
20 second penalty for hitting any No Shoot targets

Stage 4 Obstacle: 40í single slack line, sponsored by Samson Manufacturing

Stage 4:
Behind Clubhouse

On the buzzer, flip all 6 targets on a dueling tree with your pistol, using your strong hand only. Then flip all 6 targets back using your weak hand only. If a target flips back or sticks halfway it is considered a hit Ė just flip another target for 6 total on each side.

Total hits required: 12 pistol
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized

Stage 5: Maritime Operations
Pond

On the buzzer, climb into the jon boat and pull yourself forward in the pond using the supplied rope until you can see the six rifle targets in the distance: two skinny sammies and four 10" flashers placed from 50 to 200 yds. Make one hit on each target. Pull yourself back on your run time.

Total hits required: 6 rifle
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized

Stage 6 Obstacle: Get yourself and all your gear over a 6í high wall, sponsored by Dillon Precision

Stage 6: The Rifleman

On the buzzer, make two rifle hits standing at 100 yds, sitting/kneeling at 200 yds, and prone at 300 yds.

Total hits required: 6 rifle
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized

Stage 7 Obstacle: Over/Under, sponsored by Vortex

Stage 7: Hornadyís ďKey To Jimmyís HeartĒ
Pistol bays

Begin with your rifle locked in a box. Choose a key off the table (based off a hint youíre given by the RO). Hit 3 pistol steel on the way to the box, then safely reholster your pistol and unlock the box. If the key you chose does NOT work, return it to the table and choose another key. Re-engage the three pistol targets each time you return to the box with a new key. Unlock the box, retrieve your rifle, and kick down the door to enter the rifle shooting area. Make 3 hits each on 3 paper targets (one of which is a swinger), then hit all 6 plates on a rifle plate rack to finish the stage.

Total hits required: 15 rifle, 3-9 pistol depending on how well you listen
10 second FTN (Failure To Neutralize) penalty for any targets not fully neutralized
20 second penalty for hitting any No Shoot targets

Total Required Hit Count:
44 rifle
36-42 pistol depending on how well you listen

Rusty and I were just talking: "Remember when we were good?".

The level of competition at these things has gone crazy. I cut five minutes off my run time over last March, and moved DOWN in the run finish order five places.

That dude showed up to registration completely geared up and smiling. Literally every time I saw him, he was smiling. That picture sums up the energy of this event so we'll.

Not even close. I historically carry way too much ammo for these things, so this time I took a risk and cut way back. I ran out and DNF'd two stages. Lesson learned.

Here's the official compilation video of the 2019 Rockcastle Run N Gun 5k & 10k. Share it with your friends and family to give them a 4 1/2 minute glimpse at the awesomeness you accomplished last weekend, to try to talk someone new into trying it next year, or to give our sponsors some well-deserved love.

Big thanks to Rockcastle Shooting Center, Nosler, Tactical Tailor, Magpul Industries Corp., Samson Manufacturing, Dillon Precision Products, Inc, Vortex Optics, and Hornady.

Photos by Lisa Stennett and Megan Dudley. Music by Steve Vai.

I'm glad you wait a week before posting the OFFICIAL MATCH VIDEO, because by now, the soreness is gone and I'm no longer bleeding. It makes reliving the match so much more enjoyable without those two reminders.

Glad to hear it! Although I don't wait on purpose - it takes me a whole week just to get that stupid video put together with everything that goes into it. ;-)

This will be my last post on this match and I'll let it die a good death:

One of my measurements to see if the match had an appropriate difficulty level is what I call the "DNF Rate" - in other words, how many people could not finish each stage in the required 3 minute par time. If everyone finishes every stage, the match is probably too easy. A 50% DNF rate for a single stage is not a deal-breaker, but a 70% DNF rate means the stage is too hard. And if we have MANY stages with a high DNF rate, that means the overall difficulty level is too high.

The graphs below look at this in two different ways. The top graph shows me how many people DNF'd each stage (for example, 38% of the 5k competitors could not complete The Rifleman stage). The bottom graph shows me how many people had multiple DNF's (for example, 22% of the 10k competitors finished the match with only one DNF).

I am happy to report NOT ONE SINGLE COMPETITOR DNF'd every single stage of their match. Sometimes that happens, and it's never fun.

So overall, I think this was about the right difficulty - or maybe a smidge on the "too easy" side. I was a little surprised that The Rifleman is still the most DNF'd stage we have - that tells me I need to leave it in there awhile yet. :-)

Always! But if you'd rather forge damascus than edit video I totally understand.

Great video and nicely done on all the stages !

Your weak hand pistol shooting was impressive to me - a skill I have never practiced but clearly need to.

Better than my strong!

Stage 6, ironically the stage I RO'd, killed me.
