Bears

I respect bears! We are not always at the top of the food chain.

Bears.
Beets.
Battlestar Gallactica.

(I can't be the only one who thought of Dwight Schrute when I read the title...)

but you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than to be attacked by a bear!

heres how statistics work. The chance of being killed by a bear while visiting Yellowstone National Park is 1 in 2.1 million. those odds shrink to 50/50 when you turn the corner on a bear.

When you swim in the ocean, you have an almost zero chance of being stung by a bee. Meandering in a forest full of wildflowers, you don't have to worry about sharks.

Packing heat can protect from bears, but not from sharks or bees.

Statistics are meaningless..

Not in my neck of the woods! That is why in Alaska you hunt deer with a .300 win mag or .338

I've had my run ins. It is un-nerving when something that should run away from you stands on it's hind legs and growls at you. There is that moment when you want to run. Last time was a small sun bear. He didn't like my buddy and I. He stood his ground swaying back and forth. I thought he might be rabid ( one of those happened over on the eastern Az/NM line). Blast from an MP5 chanced his mind and he ran.
I know back in the late 70s I did not want to be on a seismic crew with a woman in Northern Canada.

and also why you go fishing w/ a 12 gauge pump loaded w/ alternating rounds of 00-Buck and slugs, you learn to fish w/ it slung on your shoulder, head on a swivel and eyes in the back of your head

Many years ago in Alaska while returning from a offshore oil rig my Hughes chopper pilot decided to harass some grizzly bears fishing in a stream,,, we hovered maybe 10 feet above some very large and impressive animals,,, the pilot was smaller than me and I told him if anything happened he was going to be fed to the bears first,,, as all pilots should be.

All sounds great until you are the one that is there looking at the teeth with no solid wall or barrier between you and those teeth. I've been there, it's no fun.

I wrestled a bear once. It was at the Marion County Fair. The bear won.
