Here's something a little different for you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iiv-6fMKyY

I've gotten a kick out of this song for years. I realize the song was meant as satire, but can you imagine a big group of singers doing this one, a la "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing"?

Do you think that we'd be taken seriously?

Thanks for some vintage Randy Newman! I saw Randy and Ry Cooder in a concert in Austin, in '73 or '75. Each musician played by himself, and I remember it as a great time. I remember seeing a lot of folks dressed up in vintage clothing and lot's of nice old cars in the lot. Great songs from two great artists!

We few of us here will host house concerts. A friend of mine is President of Virgin's The Spaceship Company. He has some pull and bring in some excellent performers. A concert at his home last year featured Richard Smith - guitar virtuoso http://www.richardsmithmusic.com/home

May I present his rendition of an amazing "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER"

Very nice indeed!

With baseboard that short, they should've used painted shoe mould...old painters notice these things.

I just opened this thread for the first time yesterday and spent close to two hours listening to the music you guys recommended. Most of it was great. I am so proud of some aspects of American culture, and our music is just one example of that.

I've heard Toni Price perform live. I also like her early nineties recordings on Antone's records out of Austin.

How about Beth Hart, with Joe Bonamassa on guitar?

Toni still performs every week at the Continental.

I remember Beth from her wild days. She's really turned a corner, thankfully for the sake of her voice as well. Powerful as ever.

One day I had a black co-worker (who's into Soul and Blues) listen that very I'll Take Care Of You performance. Then I let him see the video... in the office he yelled out "Das a white girl!" It was loud, as some people are when they wear headphones. Introduced a few others to Beth that day.

I like their music... the vocals tho! Eh.

I dig the idea behind the 222 song.

Man, I enjoyed that! I "discovered" Johnnie Allan and the Krazy Kats through a 1987 compilation CD called "Cajun and Zydeco Classics" on the Flashback label. This is the one, and it knocked me out from the first listen on.

Here's a little homegrown Americana. Two of my good friends playing some blues and standards. The left channel features Dennis Hardwick on Martin acoustic guitar and the late Frank Helsley on his 1932 National Style O resonator guitar. These tracks were recorded back around '79 or '80 at Dennis' little country rent house outside Cameron, Texas. They were recorded into a cassette recorder at that time and Frank's son later converted them to Mp3. Frank was the founder of Republic Guitar, nice resonator guitars made to his specs in China I believe.

http://republicguitars.com/

Sadly, Frank passed away a few weeks ago. His son Frank now runs the business. If plans come to fruition, I'll have one of those Republic resonators soon.

Is there a "public" setting you need to change? Failing that I could put it in a public Dropbox folder if you don't already have one.

Not that I can see. They still open and play for me, and according to what I could find in the FAQS, any browser should do it for anyone.

But, I think it's just screwed up somehow. If you can help me make them accessible, I will sure be grateful!

With many thanks...

Thanks to Fn/form's generous offer and help, here are new links to the songs I tried to post above. Two of my good friends playing some blues and standards. The left channel features Dennis Hardwick on Martin acoustic guitar and the late Frank Helsley on his 1932 National Style O resonator guitar on the right side.

Tex, your friends were really good pickers!

Here's one that had some comedic value a few decades ago, though I'm sure it is now very un-PC.

After reading "cassette recorder" and then hearing them... the audio quality kind of blew me away. I was expecting a tinny, white noise, far away sound.

What software, if any, do you all use to keep music organized on a computer? It would be nice to find something that might sync across Windoze/Android devices. JRiver Media Center has been recommended.

Dan Penn

My wife and I experienced a rare treat last night. We went down to Austin and saw Dan Penn at the Stateside Theater (next door to the Paramount). Penn wrote so many great soul/r&b classics such as "Dark End of the Street", "It Tears Me Up", "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", and so many others.

Last night was his 75th birthday and he was in fine form. It was a solo show, just Dan and his guitar on stage. I tell ya, it was transporting to say the least. Hearing Dan Penn sing these classics I have loved for 50+ years was, well, analogous to hearing Hank Williams sing "Your Cheating Heart", or "Kawliga". In other words, sublime. I still have the buzz going. Here's a review of last night's show, with comments by yours truly.

I've been watching Sarah for about 10yrs now. First time I saw her I was blown away by her singing Shenandoah live. Have found only one recording of her singing that--and it's just a bystander poor recording of a jam session with others.

I'll have to catch up on Sierra. Been a while.
