Need new sites for SA GI Model

I have a Springfield Armory GI Model 1911 and it sure seems like those tiny sights have shrunk over the years.

From what I have read, Springfield Armory 1911's may not be able to use "any old" 1911 sights so I am looking for some help in finding a new set of sights my old eyes can see.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

IIRC, Springfield slides require a 'medium' tang front sight - IF you plan to swage it in place like the original. A much better bet is a dovetail front sight, in which case there is a wide selection available. Surf Brownells or Midway, and see what's available.

I have always wanted to have a dovetail cut into the slide of my springfield 1911a1 but always wondered how expensive it would be. Is it worth the effort to do or should I just upgrade and get a new pistol?

Once upon a time I had a very early Springfield 1911. I was having a hard time seeing those tiny sights so I took it to a good gunsmith in the area and he machined the slide for a set of Bomar sights. When he was done, he hot blued over the park, and it turned a dull matte black.
He did a great job, and I loved that gun and sights.
I don't remember what he charged me, I think with the sights and machining it was in the $300 area.
My son has it now. He wanted a .45 and I was torn between my "big black blaster" and one of my Colts.
Justin took the Springfield.
