Hello,

New to forum. I have an an original Enfield L1A1.
Have been reading the threads with much interest!!!

I am a military rifle competion shooter (Belgium, France, Luxemburg and Germany).

And here goes my first question (hope to be able to contribute with answers as well in future ...)
How can one define the size of the installed locking shoulder. Is it posible without removing it from the rifle?

Cheers,

Marc

Welcome to the FAL Files Tara31. At some point could you post a picture of your L1A1? The folks on here are a curious bunch, in more ways than one!

I do not believe you can accurately measure the size of the LS without removing it from the receiver. As easy as it is to remove, this shouldn't be too big of an issue.

First; Welcome to the Fal Files!

Second; We hate you! Our L1A1's lack the origional receiver. Close to origional is the best we can get without paying some hefty fees for the privilage.

Third; Curious why you want to measure the LS? More important would be the headspace measurement, accomplished with headspace gages.

AS Clonehead says, the only way to measure the LS would be to remove it, as far as I know. Something I wouldn't do unless the headspace was excessive, requiring a change.

British L1A1's Locking shoulders were usually stamped with a code such as (OY). I'm not sure if this refers to the size of the LS or not.

Why do you want to know the nominal size?

What useful information would you derive?

Welcome Marc.

You'll have to remove it to know for sure what size it is.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the interest shown.

If someone tells me how to post pictures ... you will get them.

I know you guys hate me!!! Please bear in mind however ... that it is not my fault that I was "Made in Belgium"

My L1A1 closes on the NO-GO, but not on the FIELD gauge (.308 Winchester gauges). (Same as my M14's). And no need to change the locking shoulder for the time being. I was just curious.

To hate me even more ... I have the L2A2 SUIT that goes with it!

And for you guys to wish me to hell... I bought it ... brand new (cherry-picking it from à batch of 3 in the shop) ... 1 month ago for ... 595.00€ (Should be around 880.00$). And 325.00 € for the SUIT. I let you work out the $!!!

Only shot it once, at 100m, prone position with 1907 sling. 5 shots gave an H=37mm and an L=29mm with the standard metal sights.
I think I eventually might keep the thing!!!

But seriously … we over here know what you guys have to endure … and we are concerned as well. Impossible to get guns/parts over from the US to us for the moment… (that’s a nice one “us to us”).

Something tells me I’m going to like this forum!

And apologies for my “English” … I’m from the northern part of Belgium, Flanders, so my native language is Flemish (which is the same as Dutch).

Cheers,

Marc

Leave the light on.

Some of us may decide to join you over there.

Hell, my cousin married a Belgian guy. I met him once when I was 17. That was only 35 years ago. I was once told that his surname means "Lives under the bridge"

Baie welkom!

Welcome to the forums. If you can get a copy of Skennerton's "S.L.R." book on the Aussie FAL page 99 give a breakdown of the possible sizes and markings. The technical brochure from SAF Lithgow gives the complete sizing range of LS on page 41. Replacement procedure starts on page 46. This info might let you know the size of the existing LS.
