Technician Accidentally Fires Vulcan Cannon And Destroys An F-16 On The Ground In Belgium

A maintenance worker accidentally fired a 20mm Vulcan cannon from an F-16 jet he was working on at Belgium’s Florennes Air Force Base earlier this week, destroying another F-16 while damaging another aircraft nearby, according to multiple media reports.

Somebody's ass is in a sling over that move. He'll be half-stepping in the brig for quite some time over that. Or is it a stockade in the Air Force? Either way it ain't a happy place.

How to turn an F16 into a Belgian waffle. Just imagine the abuse this guy is getting from his squadron mates. Kill marks on his footlocker etc. No mention of how many people on the flightline shit their pants.

So who put an aircraft in a hanger to be maintained that had a loaded cannon? Of course this does come back to basic firearm safety. Treat every firearm as if it was loaded!

At least it wasn't one of ours. I've worked with different foreign military units during my career, and their safety standards were definitely "looser" then ours IMHO.
But I still seen US troops ground launch a hellfire, as well as an AGM 65, so...

I guess they let Paco get too close to the air field and he couldn't resist pushing that big red button....

I just wonder how the "weight on wheels" safety was bypassed

My question exactly. They have safeguards for many types of idiocy, I can't believe this isn't one of them.

I wonder do they still sight cannon in to the aircrafts centerline while on the ground or does the aircrafts weapon system just track the projectiles and adjust accordingly?

The Cannons can fire as fast as you can turn one up.

Those Westinghouse 20MM cannons when on aircraft are amazing, 600 rounds PER SECOND if they are set that high, but average we set them at was 300 rounds Per second, that will put a bullet every 3 inches the length and width of a football field in 3 seconds

The Barrel clamps offset the barrels a bit so they have a "Pattern" other wise they will put a bullet through a bullet hole at 1 mile consistently.

I Like the 20MM though ya do have to be careful with the munitions electrically Primed, 2-1/2 volts will set them off= static.

You know - just because it's POSSIBLE to fire the cannon with weight-on-wheels is piss-poor system design.

Not a good day in the Belgian air force. FORTUNATELY, the only injuries were a couple cases of hearing damage. Can't measure injuries to a particular maintainer's career however!

Well,

I wonder how many rds were fired? Dont know if I would want to be in an F-16 knowing that after a few rds it bursts into flames or explodes.

F-16 Jets Explode After Mechanic Fires Cannon From Another Parked Jet In Bizarre Accident

Quote:
Stunning photos of the aftermath show a completely destroyed Belgian Air Force F-16 fighter and another severely damaged one after a third fired its M61A1 Vulcan 20mm cannon across the flight line while parked. “You can’t help thinking of what a disaster this could have been,” base commander Col. Didier Polome told a Belgian television news station in the aftermath.

The incident happened last Friday at Florennes Air Base in Southern Belgium during routine maintenance of the jet that fired, and reportedly involved the crew servicing an F-16 accidentally triggering the heavy aircraft cannon.

Black Blade: Slightly more info ... not much but the story is picked up by several sources now.

What, are you on crack? Vulcans can run at 6000 rounds per minute, which is 100 rounds per second. We ran them at 2750 rounds per minute in the AC 130’s.

I think the picture showing the aircraft in the hanger and the drawn bullet flight is hogwash, ie Fake News. The location of the F16 gun is in the wing root and would have been just below the top of that concrete wall. There were no bullet strikes or damage in the wall that can be seen. The I also didn't see any structural damage to the left side of the plane that appeared to have been caused by projectiles. This tells me the line of fire was on line with the nose of the aircraft. The picture of the two planes side by side, the nearest plane has no damage showing while the farthest plane is almost fully engulfed.

Unless the technician was working on the weapons system for some reason that he needed the system powered up, I'm really surprised there isn't a master arming switch that should've been turned off to prevent this from happening? Surely the gun doesn't stay live all the time?

This ^^^^. Airplanes on the flightline shouldn’t have any rounds in the weapon system, either. We function tested guns in the shop after rebuilding with a belt of dummy rounds.

I wonder if any of that F-16's parts are salvageable. Doesn't look like it to me but then there may be one or two.

I always thought that when an armed aircraft landed the ammo and/or bombs/rockets were removed. I was told this by an ordnance handler at the local Air National Guard unit which flew F-16's. Maybe they don't in Belgium....

And so it goes.

OK. maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but, if you are a mechanic on a particular aircraft, shouldn't you know what all the buttons and switches do, before you get to the flight line? Like maybe you had to go to some kind of tech school or something? or am I just way off base here.

I'm happy that this didn't happen on the "kleine Brogel" US airbase in Belgium.

They DON'T keep those nukes there to fit under the F16's
Since there are NO US nuclear weapons on our teritory, i should not fear any of those apocalyptic problems.

Also, Belgium ordered the F35 yesterday.

Imagine how many guns you can buy with that money

When I worked in a weapons loading shop, all of the guns on or in the airplane, all the bomb racks, and missile launchers had safety pins that prevented the item from operating. The birds would taxi to the end of the runway where the arm and de-arm crew would remove the safety pins before the bird took off. When the birds landed after their mission they would stop at the end of the runway where the arm and de-arm crew would replace the safety pins. The birds would then taxi back to their parking places on the flightline where another load crew would download any unused munitions.

during my time in the US Army, the only weapons I ever saw or heard of that "Accidentally" went off were "empty".

Back in the early 1990s, Grumman had a similar accident with a F-14.

They were getting a Tomcat ready to return to the Navy after being worked on, probably a "D" conversion, and they needed to test fire the cannon. The Navy gave them live ammo in the ammo cans instead of blanks and after the smoke cleared a number of employee cars and Grumman buses were destroyed.

Back then they made buses for the NYC transit system and from what I remember they did not do well on the city streets.

After that accident they made a pit with a ramp for test firing.
