Forgive me I have sined....
Here's a new toy I got the other week, the
 made me do it. An original 1968 assembled M16A1 Rifle, ex NZ Army. This is why the serial number is electro penciled onto the Upper, Carrier and Bolt.

Kevin that's no sin, Those are nice rifles!
 My first issue rifle in the Army was a dead ringer for yours and out of the variations I was issued over the years it remained my favorite. It was light, completely reliable and the stock length was perfect for me. A few years ago someone offered a military Colt A1 kit here on the marketplace and nostalgia forced me to buy it and build it on a Nodak receiver. I'm glad I did because it's like having an old friend back.  Thanks for the pics and congrats on the rifle!

These come under a certain type of Endorsement (C) on the firearms licence, which covers restricted weapons (Auto/AT/SMG/Pistol/MG/Mortars/Rockets etc). These weapons cannot be used or fired. They are for collecting/displaying/Researching purposes only. So even though it can't be shot at least it can stay as original.

I think the M16A1 was the best of the AR/M16 linage. It has all the attributes that made the rifle worthwhile while not trying to make it into the "MBR" that it was/is not. I do have a soft spot for the XM177s but that is just emotional not practical.
Kev, yours is in better nick than ANY I ever saw out here. Especially toward the end... my best mate was issued with an A1/M203 combo when he was in Recon Plt 3RAR. Even though his had a smooth bore and barrels were in stock and could be fitted up on base they were not allowed to as the F88 was on the way.... 3 years he carried it around like that ...!!! Still it worked

Beautiful M16A1.
I lived with it - M16A1 - in the USMC along with the steel helmet with plastic liner, H Harness and the famous 782 gear, canteens with canteen cups, and Pancho, canvas buttpack. Seeing this rifle again brings back all kinds of memories, and the woodland pattern utilities field uniform. We heard rumors about the M16A2, but I never got to see one. That was 32 years ago. By the way, we ate rations left over from the Korean War. It was tasty still in 1981. |

I am guessing the XM16 was bead blasted at some point. The GM rifle copped the standard Australian black paint treatment that was the answer to "finish" issues here.

My first M-16 issued to me was a crappy, worn-out Hydramatic, IIRC a GM product. It was so worn out that every time it went off, gases would pour out in between the halves and out of the ejection port to the point it would sting the hell out of my eyes. In addition, after it fired, it would kick out the spent brass THEN cycle the next round, THEN extract and eject that live round, THEN cycle the next live round. It was an utter POS, but the Marine Corps will traditionally use something until it is completely worn out. I showed the malfunction to my Drill Instructor. He wasn't concerned as it was just a training rifle, he said I would be issued a better rifle once I entered The Fleet Marine Corps. In North Carolina, they gave me a beautiful NIB Colt M-16.
In Hawaii, they issued me an Colt that was actually marked "AR-15" with a full-auto switch installed. I would tell other jarheads that I had a converted AR-15. They would insist I had an M-16, but after seeing it they would scratch their little jar heads in amazement. Jarhead504 |

Jarhead504, my first M16A1 was at Quantico, VA at OCS.
I was able to just use my right hand and twisted off the flash suppressor, and then put it back on again. I just played with it for a while until I got bored. Also, the handguards were so flimsy that bits and pieces broke at the top where you can see the gas tube. I am talking about those decorative holes to let heat out at the top. Mine was a Colt. After I left the Corps, I saw a Colt AR15. The ARs and M16s look almost identical in most conceivable ways as I can recall with the exception of the selector switch. Can't remember if the AR had a forward assist. I think the one I saw did. These days it is close to impossible to get my find an AR15A1. |

Looks like my first issue rifle and that was in 1993, I thought that it was such a hunk of junk. The the magwell was mushroomed out, and the Colt engraving had almost been worn away. A SGT jumped my rifle in and didnt get his M-1950 kit and lanyard routed correctly so that when he dropped his ruck before landing, the rifle was on the bottom of the ruck and fell about 200 feet straight down before he landed. Bent the rifle at 90 degrees right in front of the buffer tube. That old warrior saw its last we got issued A2 befored we qualified later that year. Later on I was in given the task of conducting an inventory of a consolidated arms room at Ft Knox. I saw several Hydra-Matic lowers that has the A1 milled off and A2 stamped over same with the Auto and Burst. made me wonder hole old those were. That was in 2001. Thorack
