GERMAN SIG P220 COMPLETE BREAKDOWN/REFURBISH
Hello,
I thought that with the large quantity of U.S. and German made Sig Sauer P220's available nowadays that this info may be interesting to some of you buying these. Most are L.E. and Government Agency trade in's. And unless you are lucky enough to get one from a LE or GA that was a veteran or just fanatical about his or her weapon upkeep, most have never been completely disassembled. I have carried the Sig P220 in combat, in the private sector and is my everyday carry weapon still today. In my opinion and 99.9% of gunsmiths and veterans the Sig P220 is the finest, most dependable, durable and accurate .45 ACP sidearms ever made. I bought this German Sig P220R from a member here for just over $400 shipped. the weapon cycled perfect and accurate within a couple of inches at 25-30 yards. I will be adding photos from beginning to end, including new parts and cerakoteing. I will be glad to answer any questions about this refurbish project. The biggest difference in the German and U.S. made versions are in the slide, and again in MY opinion the quality of the metals and tolerances. Travis

What are your thoughts on the older Browning imported BDA? I believe they were made late 70s. Similar tp P220 but has the European mag release. Thanks, I appreciate any feedback.

Gotta know where you carried the P220 in combat?
I have a DAK model, and would like to see what it would take to convert back to SA/DA. |

I have tucked away in the safe a 1995 dated triple serial all German made P220 that I purchased new that year. I have the box with manual and test target and the two OEM seven round capacity magazines. Have another three factory seven round magazines purchased new by me. This pistol has had less than 500 rounds fired through it since purchase and still looks like it was assembled yesterday.
I was offered $800 for the entire package in a private sale. Is this considered a good selling price these days? I'm tempted to let it go at that price..... And so it goes. The Retired One |

Got any tricks for rail wear? I'm at around 35K rounds on my 1996.

Albatross52,
No, I am not in need of funds. My P220 came in a plastic foam lined box. Interestingly enough it does not have the German date code for a 1995 made Sig. It has a small shield next to the German national proof mark with the numbers 95 inside of it. I have owned a number of Sig's but this is the only one I have ever seen with that type of date stamped on the bottom of the slide. The only reason I would consider letting it go is that I just need to thin out my handgun inventory. Last year I sold off five Colts (three revolvers and two auto's). I don't hit the range anymore like I used to. Burned out I guess.... And so it goes. The Retired One |

Look for the G prefix in the serial number. here is a link to serial number mfg. dates.

No function problems for me but I always read there was no answer for frame rail wear so I was fishing on you. I get bigger groups now but I'm not sure if its rail wear or the barrel that should be replaced/fixed first. I have replaced the main cross pin that broke(take down lever?) and I suspect that involves barrel fitting so a new fitted barrel might improve things as time goes on.

Ok, I soaked all metal parts in lacquer thinner over night, this morning I used a small brass wire brush to clean all parts and laid all out to dry. The slide and lower I soaked in hot water and dawn dish washing liquid, rinsed them off and placed both in a 6 qt. pot of boiling water for 20 minutes, then back into the dawn/water bowl,( this opens the porous metals up releasing years of oil) rinsed with cool water. used scotchbrite to scuff over both. I will hit the lower with a small piece of 400 grit wet/dry paper,to smooth out small dings around mag well, trigger guard and rail.
Now to wait out this crazy Louisiana weather to spray some Cerakote. I will be using the C-series, which is an air dry formula, but I still flash bake it for 10 minutes or so at 200 degrees. Cerakote C-246 FLAT DARK EARTH. Travis ![]() ![]() I am actually doing two 2004 mfg. German Sig 220's. 1 FDE, 2nd in a mixture of C-209 dark Sig grey, C-112 COBALT, and C-102 GRAPHITE BLACK for a metallic dark grey.

Journy of a SIG220
Thank you for documenting your 220 rework. I have carried my German 220 for at least 20 years now and it has never let me down. Put Lazer crips on it 10 years or so ago and they really help in low light conditions and are a wonderful psychological deterrent on the bad guys. My personal journey thru concealed carry started with a Browning 9mm HiPower when we went from wheel guns to auto and i liked the high capacity. Than went to a Styer GB for even greater firepower.
In Europe i was licensed to carry a SIG P210 ,fantastic workmanship and reliability Back in the states I brought back a few 210's for target shooting but had transitioned into the 45 caliber for dependable man stopping power. Still carry the 220 with Tritium sights and the Lazer grip. But also had a 45 built by Les Bauer with a threaded barrell and with the right ammo quiet as can be and its right up there with the Best |

I have an older 220 with the European mag release. I don't use it much, it sits by the bed at night. The finish is almost like new because I never carry it.
I use a p239 for daily carry and it gets used at least once per week, Love the older Sig guns. |

GRIP MODIFICATION FROM DAK TO DA/SA.
I used a DA/SA set for another reburb to mark the DAK grips, and with a dremel, matched the contour within a few minutes. Travis ![]() ![]()

Cerakote cured and ready to reassemble. Another advantage of the C-series Cerakote is that it is low build, so as long as you don't get carried away on spraying, tight tolerances are not an issue.

Refurbish completed. $415 for the pistol, $425 in new parts including a new Streamlight TLR-1 HL in FDE (that didn't match as close as I hoped), grips,Trijicon sights, spring kit, and Cerakote. 30 hrs. of time invested.
I did learn a new trick on installing tight fitting sights, especially on a Cerakoted or Duracoated slide, without scratching your slide. I placed my sights in the freezer for a couple of hours to contract them, and warmed my slide in the oven for a few minutes. This makes a world of difference in a clean installation. Thank You, It will probably go in the safe with the others. I think I'll Cerakote the light to match, Streamlight offered to exchange the light, they make an FDE and an FDE brown model, looks like I received the brown.
As far as scratching it, it becomes fairly resistant to scratching when fully cured. I flash bake mine for 15-20 minutes. Usually a week it's fully cured. Travis

OLD RELIABLE
My old reliable. This is a 2003 mfg. that has been with me for 12 yrs., it has never failed me, if I leave my home it is with me. The only thing I have ever done was replace the grips with factory originals from the early 90's,clean it and shoot it. I replaced the light a couple of yrs ago for a brighter one, and will replace the sights soon.

I disassembled my light last night and Cerakoted it to match. Got it assembled and installed today. That bronze color just wasn't working for me.

Interesting. I was working for the company doing the OEM K-Kote on Sigs in '92, and would typically A&D 200+ guns a week. Sig's marketing was pretty poor back then - they kept the prices artificially high to create some kind of snooty exclusivity. Bit them in the ass. While the 220 was pretty much the only choice for a DA .45, Glock was the Volkspistole and priced accordingly.
And yeah, while Sigs are pretty good, they have their faults as well. They must be kept well lubed in the transfer bar area and are not happy at all when one introduces Arizona blowing dust. Well, and it's a double action, which I guess is ok to keep those with no discipline or training from shooting themselves. And it is a little faster SA reset than on my beloved P35s. My first home gunsmithing video was on the Sig. But since I am realist, I no longer own any Sigs. Might be nice for a collector, but I carry a Glock - same trigger pull every time, more reliable, higher mag capacity, etc. Here's one of the two tones from my archives. Also did a lot of front strap stippling - aluminum cuts nicely. And yeah, I hate the euro mag release. ![]()

Everyone has their opinions, I've had sand from 2 continents in my Sig 220, and it never let me down, neither did the harsh ever changing environment of Venezuela.

I'm usually not into the whole FDE thing or Cerakote, but you did a nice job refurbing that 220.
To me you can never go wrong with a Sig 220 series pistol, but certainly I understand why people go the Glock route. I have both but enjoy shooting the 220 series pistols more. |

The same thing that makes a sig so accurate is it's downfall in hostile environments. The tolerances are too tight. While I agree that "everyone has their opinion" (and some opinions have merit), you were the one with the silly assertion In my opinion and 99.9% of gunsmiths and veterans the Sig P220 is the finest, most dependable, durable and accurate .45 ACP sidearms ever made. The underlined part is your epic fail. I believe 99% of veterans have never shot a 220, let alone owned one - making their opinion irrelevant.

Good stuff. Too bad it's just going to be sitting in a safe. Seems a real shame after all that work. Was hoping for an after range report. Thanks again for the share, though. Fun read.

Another German P220 Completed
I recently purchased 3 more German Sig P220's. This is the first I've completed of the 3. I decided to match the Legion grey color (matches my legion 226), I am waiting on my Hogue G-10 grips (having Navy SEAL trident logo laser engraved) and my light. Same treatment as the prior refurbs.

Looking for a pair now but picky. No picatinny rail, SAO and 45 or 10mm. Preferably one of each. The Pro Hunter without pic rail might be cool if able to order it that way. Have one SIG 1911 with pic rail, pile of them without plus seven 2022's with pic rails. Had to buy three holsters just so the 1911 with rail would come out clean. The 2022's were totally new so buying holsters to accommodate was no big issue. What I like is always finding clean used 2022's in $325 to $350 price range, usually with three to five magazines and for $149 including express two way shipping they will go completely through the pistol, replace all wear items and return with warranty plus do any custom work for very fair price while in their shop. Can treat the 2022's like a hammer, screw gun or any tool in box or belt and not worry about hurting it. But a pair of 220's are high on my list. Are the Gen 2 Carry Models only ones without rails standard? Nice pistols and nice work sir.

i bought a couple many years ago after reading up on them.
What i liked was that they were supposedly designed from the ground up to eat 45ACP & 45 HPs. So not trying to mod something to make it work, but doing it the right way. i also got one of the P220s in 9mm with the older 22LR conversion. |

GERMAN SIG P220 COMPLETE BREAKDOWN/REFURBISH
Just found this in the archives. These are some amazing pistols. I have seen a few in combat, mostly Navy and Marine officers. Usually those that could afford to buy their own sidearms.

Quit it, you are going to make me break my 220 out of the safe and actually shoot it. It's ok, and a beautiful piece of work but I like my S&W 645 much better.

Type "sig p220 complete disassembly " into the search bar at youtube and you'll get a number of good videos.

GERMAN SIG P220 COMPLETE BREAKDOWN/REFURBISH
The German P220 is fairly simple. I stripped mine yesterday, soaked all parts in lacquer thinner starting last night, will give them a good hour long boiling tomorrow. hopefully everything will come out clean and pristine and start with some steel wool. I ordered up a new barrel and spring kit from SigSauer. also a new set of Trijicon sights, along with a high $$$$ sight pusher.
