Building up a Belgian 50.00

Well, one of my next personal projects is to put some of my pile of parts into yet another working rifle. This time, it's a Belgian 50.00 variant. Some time back, I purchased a NOS Belgian lower with wood butt. At Knob Creek, I scoured and came up with a NOS Belgian bipod cut barrel. Nice! Since then, I've screwed it together onto an earlier Coonan Type 1 and gathered a piece or two slowly. No hurry. Today, I scored a NOS nonserialized Belgian bolt carrier, complete with cosmolene still intact. I'm still on the quest, as it seems, to gather more parts. I need to come up with a Belgian bolt, charging handle, gas tube/piston/spring, front sight parts, flash hider screw, etc.

It appears you are building a 50.00 model since the M2 has no flash hider and a non-bipod cut barrel. You have an excellent collection of parts.

Looks like the makings of a nice early 1960s 50.00 clone, the most attractive metric variant IMHO.

If you continue to score Belgian parts, that will be an awesome rifle!

Yeah, although I'm an Inch guy, I'm liking this project. No rush, but if you got some parts, PM. I don't want this to turn into an ad, though.

Get with Sarco. Maybe they have some spare parts from their Chilean contract rifles, which has been said to be Belgium rifles (except for most handguards).

Well, this Belgiam 50.00 M2 (if that's the proper name of it) is nearly done. I just have to refinish some of the parts. All but the charging handle lug (very near NOS) was NOS Belgian parts with the exception of the Coonan Type 1 receiver. I thank everyone who dug into their pile and got me a part here and there, especially the guy at the creek who had a pile of random barrels to every gun know to man. He said, "Ah, just pick one out and I'll price it." So, I picked out this NOS Belgian threaded barrel. He said, "Give me $50 bucks." I said, "I'll take both of them." and left with 2 NOS barrels for $100. He seemed happy that I dug through and found something useful. Hehe...

Anyway, until this thing gets test fired/repainted, I need a proper sling. There are a few that I have seen, but would a proper Belgian sling look similar to the Brit's green web material sling, but have the sewn on rectangles along it. Here is a pic of it. Let me know, please, as I am not down with the hole sling knowledge.

Would this sling be proper? If not, which one would I need?

VHart, I kinda doubt it, but who knows. It's taken me a little while to acquire all Belgian parts, but you could do it, too.

Jugsy, you agree with my wife on the butt. I found these Belgian slings at Liberty Tree Collectors. Are they not the proper one? Is there a pic of the proper one somewhere if not? I think I remember seeing them years ago at Knob Creek. IIRC, they had a little thicker "sides" on them and that they were cotton/drabbish colored compared to the Commonwealth slings.....and, possibly, the buckles were blackened.

Your sling will work , but all of the M2 clones I have seen had lugged non threaded barrels....that said your rifle looks great...

I thought M2s Had Lugged - Threaded Barrels?

I thought the barrel difference was that the M2 has lugged Threaded Barrels???

These links may clear up some confusions between the M1, M2 ( or cause more ).

As to the sling question, yes those Liberty Tree slings are correct for M2.

We'll just call it a 50.00 and I'll order up one of those fancy Belgian slings and call it a day. What to build next?

Damn gorgeous rifle.

Call me a rifle bigot or prejudiced or an ass, whatever you feel might fit, I just can't get past the gut dropping feeling of seeing such a gorgeous collection of parts, considering the effort to acquire them, and the rarity of such items, be built on a Coonan. Such a beauty requires as least the same effort it took to find the parts be put into finding a proper forged receiver, or at least one that doesn't have that ugly ass gap in front of the carrier if for no other reason.

But that's just my .02.

I will rephrase, since I don’t have any actual experience with the Liberty Tree slings. They are the correct STYLE.

HK, I had the Coonan already on hand. It wasn't like I saved it for a Belgian build, although it timed up perfectly. Consider it a holding jig for the parts until I can get the proper receiver. I'm in no hurry, as always, and just wanted these parts in the form of a rifle. I'm sure it would shoot just as good.
