Butt stock installation

I got new wood for my Aussie L1. Ive never dis-assembled a buttstock on a L1 before. Imagine my surprise when I loosened the retaining nut and it shot across my house? Any ideas on assembling the stock without a stock removal tool. I did find a tool at Sarco. Guess I can order one Monday.

Lol!! I too made that mistake a few years back when i did my furniture swap, still have a grease spot on my ceiling in my office/ gun room. I did buy the buttstock tool but I found that the metal cleaning rods for cleaning rifles work as good . For disassembly use a large flathead screwdriver and wrap a rag around the stock after you remove the buttplate or pad . Then when the recoil spring pops loose you can catch it. You get used to the feel and can time it right then for reassembly put the cleaning rod through the spring and push it in tighten the screw down and the cleaning rod will slide right out the hole. It works perfect. I needed a use for my old hoppes screw together rods because I use the fiberglass one lice rods for cleaning now.

Cleaning rod, long thin socket, small set of vise grips helps to get everything back together.

Getting it off, that's always easy!

Slip socket over cleaning rod, then plug, then into the spring.

Vise grips over cleaning rod, loose, slip them down rod as far as ya can shove, then clamp and cuss.

Once, after ya stop cussing, get the plug in contact with the threads, simply twist the vise grips and get threads started.

The socket will grab, have enough contact/force on it to twist plug and thread it.

After 1st try, buy tha tool!!!!

Suggest, no small children, ladies, grand mothers present, or within hearing distance when doing the above.

I have used an old M16 gas tube (bend prevents from sliding all the way in, you can press down on it somewhat), and a narrow flat head screw driver to install... once the threads are started, you are good to go.

any long skinny steel rod (welding wire, for instance) and a very wide screwdriver.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Damn! I've been at this for over three hours. I tried everything. My dogs are hiding, damn near killed the cat with a spring loaded projectile, I've got dents in my ceiling, Im covered with 50 year old grease. I'm ordering the tool from Sarco Monday.

What I do is use a 22 cal cleaning rod and 2 screwdrivers. Put the nut and spring on the cleaning rod and insert it into the tube. Sit on a chair with the trigger housing between your legs and use the 2 screwdrivers to push the nut down and turn it. You have to push the nut down so its even so it will line up with the threads thats why the 2 screwdrivers . Then when you get the thread started the fun is over

I can remember years ago when really no one had much of a clue
yeah a few folks were maimed up a small sort pulling butts
My 1st experience was in the 80s swapping plastic for wood on a SAR48

No wrench, ground up a chunk of sheet metal to fit the slot...I still have a scar on my cheek bone
Hey, I was like 23 years old, there was about no information back then

Early 90s ?
Nobody was using pin gauges in barrel up jobs
Heck damn few were using headspace gauges

shit how many recall the old school internet build tutorials ?
I have copies of them
well, they worked but it's damn scary crap today and that was late 90s

Just saying it's wise to regard any FAL build as an unknown quantity
lot of these were just slapped together by basement bubbas, still somewhat are.

Never had a tool, just always used the 1st handled section of a .22 cleaning rod. It fits through the hole in the bolt, aligns the spring. just push it all down, and rotate the handle. That will generally get the first few threads started on the bolt, then use a wide screwdriver to finish it up. The tool is probably nice and handy, but I've never had enough reason to spend the $$$ since this has worked for me.

I just tried without the tool and gave up. I searched through all my crap till I found it. What is a major effort, is pretty easy with the tool, wait till you get it.
