Great

I have one on a L1A1 Para. I really like it. The large aperature works great for playing CQB while the smaller handles distance targeting.

when ever I saw one during the 6 monthly inspection it would be removed and kept for use by the Regiments shooting team. the smaller apature and larger leaf (blocking out more of the back ground) gave a much better sight picture.
near the end of their service there were no Hythe spares issued so we had to get them where we could !!!!!!

How easy is it to just change the aperture from the standard to the Hythe? The reson I ask is the guy I'm getting it from can sell a complete rear with both apertures, or just both sights.
Its obviously cheaper to just get the latter.

I have 2 small apertures for the Hythe with no large apertures to go with them if your source has any spares I'd be interested. These are the best sights by far for inch rifles (including the Canadians).

If your swapping the apertures themselves, just push out pivot pin without loosing the ball bearings and reassemble. The pin may need to have the end opened with a center punch to retain it in the slide.

They were supplied as a retrofit kit and it is not hard at all. If it saves you a few $$s that is what i would do..!!

Thanks, that sounds easy enough. If anyone has a link, or a few pics, that sure would be a big help.

How hard would it be to make a copy of the front sight that would able to hold a small tritium vial that was 1.5x55mm?
Does anyone have some good close up pics of an original front sight?

Well, I'll certainly declare interest on both complete sights and Hythe front sights! Make my 1966 with black furniture a bit more "complete".

Does it mean you have to turn the front sight 90-degree before the nightfall? And, turn it back the next morning?

If I remember right, that's exactly it.

Small wonder they subsequently came up with the SUIT sight.

hythe sights

Hi all. The Mk1 frontsight has the tritium insert running down the centre of the blade, it has a special front securing screw that a spring fitted into so that the sight when turned to the 90 degree position (ie night position) the spring tension held it there and aternately the day position. The Mk2 with the two dots was retained by its screw and when zeroed no ateration was necessary. Ron

Right I think this is sorted now regarding foresights ?

1st Version (short thread, square shaft with wide blade & long Trilux tube) 'Y' shaped head (spring held)I have a few of these.Shown in insert in pic of Hythe sights.

2nd Version (short thread, square shaft with 2 viewing ports) sping held.

2/1 ? Version (short thread, square shaft with 2 viewing ports AND ‘V’ Notch)
can be held by spring or fixed by screw. This is the type I only have 3 of.(pic below showing 'V' notch in back of foresight)

3rd Version (normal long thread with 2 viewing ports and ‘V’ notch.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer ?

I have now taken pictures of all sights for those that have PM'd me,you have my email address if you would like me to send them to you.

hythe sights

Hi all. During my service as an armourer, the Mk1 sight saw limited service, and was replaced by the Mk2, there was no need to have a spring retention as when the Mk 2 was zeroed the two tritium dots were always to the rear, and secured by the securing screw, as we replaced the front sights all Mk1 sights, special securing screw, and springs, were consigned to the scrap box. I have never used the other two front sights mentioned. Ron.

This picture illustrates the MK3 (common) version that was made without a square post for spring retaining.Just had the V notch in the back for permanant fixing by the screw.

It still has 2 dots as the MK2 but length is shorter.

hythe sights

Hi L4A4. I stand corrected, obviously the sights I have fitted were not Mk 2 but Mk 3, the Mk 2 must have had a very limited run, as I personally have never seen or used one. As stated the only ones used by the infantry regt I was serving with were, the Mk1 and Mk3. At the end of an operational tour the sights had to be removed and issued to another infantry unit deploying on operations. If you have all three frontsights complete with spring and securing screw they are rare beasts to have survived this long. Ron

Hi Ron appologies regarding the MK2/MK3 sight post differences,no offence ment
As my tag L4A4 suggests I'm into LMG's rather than the SLR's,it's just that as these items have come to light I'm trying to swat up on as much info about them as I can so I not to misrepresent anything offered.

The backsights offered I have been told are also the initial production version with no fingernail cut in the leaf as per the pic above taken from the book.

Received both of my rear sight apertures and did a little surgery on my rear sight. Those little detent balls can be a real pain to get back in place, but not impossible. The springs and their holes needed cleaning, and this helped out a little bit with my almost too tight rear sight adjustment. Here are some pics for those who are interested:

I'm currently waiting on the Hythe Front Sight, and I think it may be possible to re-animate it, but I'll have to see. I can see why the Brit squaddies liked these, the sight picture is MUCH better than standard issue.

I have several and have had them on rifles for years...they are great and the apitures are different sized (smaller) then the original standard sight and thus my rifles shoot better-more accurate with them for sure.
