Does this mean you are going to come to some of our service rifle matches?

Ammo that doesn't land promptly downrange is just.... well, you know.

Good move putting it on wheels. Nice being able to wheel it out and sweep all the clips and springs up that seem to soak into concrete.

You did real good!!!!

Your siding looks like what I used on the inside of mine, over the wall insulation.
Plywood, correct?
Check out that "blue jean" sound proofing insulation batts, no itch and fireproof from Lowes.
Cost a few dollars more, but when you shut the doors, you shut out the outside world.

And yepper on size, going to add a few hundred feet to mine, and its less than 2 yrs old.

I'm trying to get folks together for an impromptu "squadded practice" (800 aggregate) thing Saturday at FRGC. Not getting a lot of enthusiastic responses so far. Supposed to be 28* at show time.

Then the very next Saturday (January 19) we have an actual match at FRGC. You can shoot whatever you want so long as its no larger than .30 caliber, isn't fired on full-auto, and you stop shooting when the man says stop shooting, and you take your turn pulling pits.

We do that the third Saturday of every month (even the warm ones) at FRGC.
We even do it several times a month in March and April.
Calendar is online at http://fxrgc.org/calendar/maincal.cfm
Except for the Boy Scouts merit-badge stuff, all our rifle and pistol events are open to the public.

We're even doing a genuine Small Arms Firing School on CMP's eletctronic targets in June.
http://fxrgc.org/calendar/viewEvent.cfm?EventID=3537

Load ya up some ammo and show up!

Do ya'll consider 8mm Mauser to be bigger than .30 cal?

OP: I am going to sit here for about half an hour and hate on you intently. I will eventually come to greatly respect and admire your accomplishment. I may not remember to come back and post though. In the mean time.....

Looks great and the width of your bench is ample with your presses, giving you some elbow room.
Exterior is nice, too.

I think I'd waive the rule for you.

Just so I could watch you shoot 88 rounds of 8mm out of that pile-driver-on-a-pogo-stick from the positions we fire.

I ask because I see that 30 cal rule mentioned frequently. I presumed it was to discourage the use of belted magnums, black powder cartridges, and 50 BMG.

The reason for it is two-fold.

And the NRA rule is actually .33 caliber (which is your 8mm).

First, you gotta draw a line somewhere on how fat a bullet you are going to allow for shooting at targets with scoring rings. A fatter bullet has an advantage that it will cut higher-value scoring rings, while a smaller bullet will fall just outside.

Second, the scoring-spotters that go inthe bulletholes are only so big. Once the holes get larger than .33 caliber, the spindle on the scoring-spotter just flops around in the hole, and will fall out of the target when the puller tries to raise the target.

Perhaps not a "reason" per se, but a practical observation: It would be a rare man who could endure firing 88 ACCURATE shots in the allowed time-frames with a rifle larger than .33 caliber. Such a rifle would be a collarbone-smasher if the trajectory were anything other than a rainbow. Lighter-recoiling large-bore guns would produce unsatisfactory accuracy at the distances we shoot. Farcical performances are discouraged.

At our club, we generally limit highpower matches to .30 caliber. It keeps the "farcical" thing from happening. If you show up with your 8mm, and you shoot your 22 shots offhand to start the match, and without having to distract the range officer, and half the shooters on the line, and pissing off the pit-pullers by calling for a mark because you missed the whole damn 6' x 6' target frame at 200 yards, I don't think anybody would say a thing to you except "Well done!"
