Lazy burn at Liège

This might be a Paco question:

I was reading a thread at gunboards and one of the replies (from a guy in Belgium) stated that the thread (about failing FN49 bolt carriers reminded him about a 'conversation friends and myself once had with a rather known armsdealer/shop in the city of Liège. He knew that "heaps" of old written off SAFN 49 were burnt by a regional military arsenal. It was faster as to seperate the metal from the wood by any other means.' Have anyone heard of that WTF event?

What i know from 1st hand is that tons of wooden stocks were used as firewood.
The soldiers at the arsenal were allowed to burn stocks, as long as they were sawed in 2 pieces...
Burns well he said

Supposedly the West German Bundeswehr did the same thing with their Garands and M1 carbines in the 60s...piled 'em up, burned 'em, and sold the remaining steel for scrap.

My dad was a Wheelus AFB in Tripoli when we pulled out. He said they dug pits, tossed in cases and cases of NIB BARs and Thompsons, poured on diesel and lit them on fire....

Know a place they rolled in drums of M1 grands into a pit(1962-3). Piled other stuff in and covered it up. Today it is an abandon airport. When I retire, time for a metal detector expedition. Know another spot which has drums of B-29 engines buried.
