HK 91 rear sight not aligned to rifle bore

Back in the 80's I bought an HK 91 at a gun show. Back then I was shooting in NRA High Power Rifle competition and thought I would us it for that. When I went to the range to zero it at 200 yds I found a problem getting the windage zeroed. I ran the rear sight all the way over to one side and still could not get it dead on the bulls eye.

I bought a Williams peep sight for the HK, installed it and tried to zero it for windage but had the same problem. I became discouraged by that and also the facts that the trigger sucks and the rear sight is not as finely adjustable as the M1 I used for competition. I sold it ( for a $300 profit ).

Twelve years ago I bought a PTR91 at a gun show here in Jacksonville. When I went to the range with it I had exactly the same problem with zeroing for windage except in the opposite direction. I solved that problem, and the coarse rear sight drum issue, by installing a scope. Also my eyes no longer like iron sights.

Thinking about the same problem with two different rifles I came to the conclusion that the process of welding the rear sight to the receiver was why they both had the same problem.

Thoughts?

What do the two rifles have in common?

PTR91 is an HK91 clone. It is manufactured on HK equipment which IIRC the manufacturer bought from Portugal. Since they did not buy a license from HK they cannot call their rifle an HK91 but it is one except in name.

My PTR- 2016 vintage- has the rear sight centered when zeroed, or maybe a .5mm off. I think you just got lucky.

As usual the luck I got was bad.

BTW my PTR91 is labeled "JLD Enterprises, Inc, Farmington CT". Does yours have the same mfg name? I understand that the enterprise changed owners in 2006.

I would say that's not enough information or data to draw that sort of conclusion. Certainly a possibility, but with so many other things it could be I wouldn't put money on it.

HK91 sights

I've owned over 20 real German production 91's, and never had an issue with welds being true. Their quality control was legendary.

Springfield? yep
FMP? Maybe

Reportedly too old an issue for any PTR, Century, or MKE, but there are known problems.

Most interesting.

I have built more than 1000 HK91/G3's, 93,33,MP5's
In the middle of building my last 12 G3's kits this week.
The problem is when the front sight tripple tree is installed if you do not center the rear sight and align the front sight properly it will be canted to the left or right.
I use a lazer bore sight to get this done properly.
As far as the factory HK91 it probably had a bent front sight.

I'm thinking the same as Mark. Probably rear sight is fine and front sight /triple frame is canted
