The committee has met and decided that the National Winter BoB Exercise will be 11 - 13 February 2011
This is the time when you take your BoB and head out to the nearest patch of "wilderness" and test your gear.
It is conducted all over the country on this weekend.

the ozark group is doing it in kansas this year due to the warm weather the last several years

Last Feb I spent one night out with Pluskat in the mountains of central Oregon. It was 13*.

If a person doesn't have the right clothes, no amount of fire is going to save the day.

Sleeping bags are great, but a 0* bag isn't comfortable at 0*. It may keep you from dying at 0*...

Don't take your clothes off when you go to bed - dirty or not, when it is that cold, you don't want to re-heat more clothes and bags.

I always add 20-25 degrees to those bag ratings. A "0" degree bag may keep you alive at 0 degrees but you wont be comfortable. Also using a mummy bag vs rectangular and wearing a stocking cap helps.

A waterproof bivy bag is a good investment too. It can keep you dry and add a little heat.

if you have dry underware you should change into it before going to sleep .
if you are damp with sweat you will sleep cold .

that goes for dry socks , i keep a flannel hardhat liner in my sleeping bag , if your head is warm it will go a long way to keep the rest of you warm .

spend a few minutes fluffing up your sleeping bag about 15 minutes before you get in it . if there are leafes around i make a deep bed and then put my sleeping mat on top of that ,
a decent sleeping mat will help keep you cold .

i have been to a lot of campouts were i heard then next morning of guy complaining about being cold all nite, when i was perfectly comfortable.

poly pro is our friend. we have built reflector fires that have had to be tamped down .because we were getting to hot.
