Surplus Ammo Porn

Brought in at a local shop. A local class 3 guy died and his family gave the ammo to a "friend" of the deceased who is selling all of it of for a tidy profit.
The Privi 54R is particularly interesting as it is contract ammo made in 2003 for Iraqi forces. Non corrosive and boxer primed. I will buy some of that and the Hungarian heavy ball.

If I lived close by, a LOT of that would be going home with me.

A true "friend" of the deceased would cut his profit margin to get more coin for the family. At least that's what I'd do.

That Hungarian silver over yellow stuff is HOT. I had a couple cans of that and shot it through my Mosin carbines. Ow, my aching shoulder. Big fireballs too.

That stuff was specifically made to pull NATO Level 3 rifle armor plates through the soldier wearing it in strings and shards. Often x54 has lower velocity than NATO x51 so they figured out needed to have some hot steel core for troops in armor. Been told ISIS snipers like the steel core x54 as it allows them to make center mass shots knowing it will defeat our current armor plates.

Never understood why we use 7.62x51 NATO ball as our standard for ability of rifle plates instead of 7.62x54 steel core. Guess it's why a lot of troops run their own personally purchased plates.

Part of that is because the Warsaw Pact 54R comes in 172ish grain heavy ball (usually yellow tip like that Hungarian stuff) and 147ish grain light ball (like Czech and Romanian LPS). The heavy ball would definitely have slower velocities than Nato standard 150ish grain 7.62x51.

A lot of guys used to think silvertip meant light ball, but it just means steel core, though yellow tip does mean heavy ball. So silver tip over yellow means steel core heavy ball. Though, it doesn't appear that the Warsaw Pact nations were consistent with this. An absence of color codes means it could be anything.

"Anything"?.....no, an absence of a color code means it is ball ammo. In the case of 7.62x54R the date of production and country of mfg will tell you if it is type L (lead core) or LPS (steel core).
