Might have been a bit impulsive

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/815941056

Was browsing the joker and found what appears to be a Prussian M1916 C96. Called the seller for more info and made a deal for it. Now I just have to wait till it arrives to see if I struck a gem, or a turd the seller knew next to nothing about vintage guns, as you can see by his other auctions. He did verify it has a 9mm bore though.

Very nice! I guess you would have had to call him with that written description. So what happened to the red 9 in the grips? And the ribs? I don't recall ever seeing a C96 without ribs in the grips except for some schamncy civilian models.

My guess is that the grips are either not original, or have been smoothed down with wear or for small hands. This pistol should have had 25 line grips, the red 9 may or may not have been factory applied by this serial, the guns delivered before April 1917 (if my memory serves correctly) left the factory without the 9. Field armorers were directed to burn the 9 in guns without it, and it is unclear, but some may have been returned to Mauser for the mark. The grips are the only non typical indicator on this pistol that I see.

Well, it’s home. Couldn’t be happier, all legitimate, with the only problem being that the original serial numbered grips have been smoothed down. Pretty happy with what I ended up with.

Poking around on GBr this evening I found this 'C-93'

for about another $19,000.00 you could add it to your collection.....

The first thing I would do after buying one of them would be to go to a SASS shooting event just to hear them saying I can't use it because it is too modern or not single action. Or that it was not used in the West.

I went through that with my Merwin and Hulbert .44-40 double action Pocket Army model

Star Army models and Cooper Navy DAs would get grumbles at black powder shoots

a couple Cowboy shoots wouldn't let me compete in the rifle events with a S&W NM #3 target with the detachable shoulder stock
ITS NOT A RIFLE !!!

Buddy was booted off the firing line at a black powder shoot for using an original under hammer slug gun from the 1850s
wasn't period correct said the dweebs with TC Hawkins rifles

I’ve shot a couple of early Loewe Borchardts, neat pistols, but there is a reason for the Luger re-engineer. I still think the Sharps Borchardt rifle was Hugo’s real crown.

Years ago on gunbroker I saw an auction titled "FN gun". I could see it was a 1922 in 9mm Kurz. Arrived in mint shape. Paid $80 for it. Where are the deals anymore? Everything now is scarred up, junked up, and overpriced to ridiculous levels covered in free dog hair and swamp scum.

Nice pistol! I have one of the 1920 marked Red 9s with the short barrel and fixed rear sight. Creates lots of interest at the range with the shoulder stock holster attached. Watch where you put your thumb though.

Honestly never thought I’d have a real one, I’ve been playing around with rebored Chinese returns for years, definitely no comparison. Amazingly my last rebore sold for just barely shy of what I was able to get this gem for. I do love C96s.
