in bear country a gun in your pack is nearly useless, .44 mag is baseline to start, .45-70 or 12 gauge slugs are better

Hunted elk in that part of the country. Mostly in the Big Horns to the east and have hunted north of Yellowstone in the Bitterroot and Pintler (Anaconda) ranges. Lot's of Grizz in that country. Always carry my S&W .500 just in case.

Chubon was able to run to his pack a few yards away and retrieve a pistol but was unable to safely fire a shot at the bear that had pounced upon Uptain. The attacking bear then spun, charged Chubon, grabbed his foot and dragged him to the ground. He sustained injuries to his leg, chest, and arm, but was able to throw the gun to Uptain and get loose before running from the scene to phone for help.
In other words, he left his hunting partner to deal with the bears and dug out. I mean, if he had the gun in his hand, why not shoot the bear in the face instead of tossing it to the other guy, before "running for help" ?

Bow hunters so I wonder if they are allowed to carry a handgun on their person when hunting. Couldn't find anything in the regs.

Threw the pistol to the other guy and ran. I guess the ole adage "i don't need to be faster than the bear, just faster than you applies."
Seems like I would have been carrying a holstered .50AE Desert Eagle up in that neck of the woods if a .44 mag is whimpy

![]() I already have a SRH in .44 with 7.5" barrel so it's a cartridge and revolver I'd be familiar with.

Don't think it's an issue in WY.

A ******* suicide mission, it was.
Darwins law. Bear country, and they lost the elk. What did they think was going to happen overnight? Draw in some mosquitos?..............or bears. Where was the 45-70 guide gun, or bigger for protection? Assholes; **** the law when finding a lost elk overnight. Robert Roark said, "use enough gun." Yesterday at the local post office, a hunter was describing his taking a black bear this past weekend in the Adirondacks; bow hunter too. He hit the bear with 7 arrows, and finally chased him down and ultimately used a 9mm; 10 more shots. Only a 275lb black bear. Those 2 bears are still grinning about that delicious meal. Goddammit, this pisses me off..............incompetency and total foolishness. |

Okay, I am rethinking taking that Garand out of the laminated stock. I might need it as a counter-Bear weapon in case some stupid liberul project releases bears into the suburbs.

Years ago, I can remember a bullet ad, maybe Hornady; a record brown bear, (really huge), was taken with a bolt action 30-06, using a 180 or 220 grain bullet.
When a bear has his blood up, and running at you............ If the bear gets the drop on you...........make sure to have a bottle of hot sauce or honey in your jacket pocket, to make the meal hit the spot. An 5 shot clip in a Garand, might just be very good bear medicine. 5 180's, would give you time to reload another 5 rd clip. |

Hunting laws re capacity over 5 rounds.
BAR, Rem 7400, can be had in 30-06. The Remington can be had in 35 Whelen. Win 95 Lever gun, too. Lever action. 45-70 guide gun would be first choice, however. Dave Scoville in Rifle mag a while back, converted a new Browning '95 lever gun, into a wildcat based upon the 9.3 x 62; he hates bears too. |

Hunting laws where I live are 10 rounds.
And the 7400 in 30-06 did have an aftermarket magazine that would do 10+1. I had one. Made by Eagle Industries IIRC. |

They did use them on and bolted to the top of piper cubs in Alaska to shoot them down. There is a picture of one in one of the Grandad's owner association magazine.
With that said, there is a girl who killed a black bear with a .22 rifle

I’ve got to hand it to the the hunting guide, at least from what I have read is that he drew the attention of the bears to protect his client. I grew up hunting in the Windriver area of WY and hunted some in the area north of Yellowstone NP as a youth. This is where I learned the value of carrying a handgun as a backup. It also seems these two bears were not interested in the elk that they had taken. When the fish & game cops went looking for the bears the bears charged them & it took five of them to kill the bears. They also located the elk which had not been touched by the bears. This is the reason why WY, ID, and MT all want to hunt Grizzly Bears as there aren’t any grizzly bears in the lower 48 that have ever been hunted by humans. They don’t see us as another apex predator but as prey.
As for carrying a Desert Eagle in 50AE, it is pretty useless. It has too long of a barrel, weights too much, has too big of a grip (unless your Andre the Giant) and the 50AE isn’t all that great of a round. I usually carry a S&W model 19 with a 2.5 barrel loaded with 6 rounds of 180 gr bullets traveling at about 1300 fps or my Glock G20 with 15 rounds of 180 gr bullets at about 1350fps. I carry these because I’ve learned that by the end of the week of hunting I’m looking for anything I can to leave at camp because the weight is taking a toll on me. If I had a short barreled revolver in 44 mag, 45 LC, or 454 Casual, I’d carry one too. As for carrying a gun while bow hunting, more states in the West are allowing it and most don’t consider a CCW as a hunting tool. Last edited by grumpy1; October 21, 2018 at 20:25. |

I used to carry a large can of Bear Spray (pepper spray for bears) and my S&W 500 for defense against grizz when hiking in Montana. The Bear Spray was for the Bear, the S&W 500 was my final defense to kill myself if the Bear Spray didn't work. Lol.

I had a 35 Whelen Garand built for such occasions. One of these days I’ll live in bear country for real, but even here in southern Ohio we are seeing black bear again. If I can devise a way for the Garand to hold and feed more than 4 rounds effectively it will be potent.

Left the house last Monday morning and as I turned a corner headed down the driveway I had four black bears beneath one of my pear trees. A sow and her three half-grown cubs. I figured as much since we have a light acorn crop this fall and something has been cleaning up the fallen pears on all my trees. They took off like a shot once the car came into view. Today was the first day of our early muzzle loader deer season. I take along a .357mag just because.

Honestly i think if just for protection from bears and moose ,if in an area where both inhabit, a shotgun with the nastiest slugs possible and 3" ones at that. Shot a few 3" mag slugs from my benelli and holy shit did it punch the shit out of my shoulder and have a visible flash in broad daylight... and gave me a ear to ear grin when i looked at the target..got all 3 holes to touch at 50y ..soo i think it would work.
I would also carry my Desert ego in 44 mag..only big bore i have.. |
