Andy your photo does appear in the book. However, it's on the dust jacket, but since the book is being published as an image wrap, the inside of the dust jacket isn't part of the finished product. Sorry. If you want a copy with the dust jacket just to get your photo above, I can do that for you.

Having received a couple of relatively expensive, heavy books damaged in shipping recently 'from' Amazon because of crappy packaging (they used to be pretty good with packaging, but, clearly, not anymore), you need to think through your shipping procedures carefully.

While the richest person on Earth, Jeff Bezos, can support his slave laborers being careless in packaging because he can afford free replacements, I'm guessing that such a policy would work less well for you.

I know that I'd be pretty disappointed to receive your fine book all beat up from shipping and would expect a replacement...

Make sure that those handling your shipping are aware of these problems...

Your thoughts on shipping please.

Flats rate box about $15 insured. Fits two books.

Flat rate envelope about $9 insured but Iím not going to offer replacements and chase USPS for refund.

Media rate $3 to $5 and 5 to 15 days based on location.

What would be your preference?

If you want to avoid damage, an envelope is probably a no go...

Damage is most likely to the corners, so an appropriately large box (so that the book is not a tight fit) with the book wrapped in bubble wrap (or something similar) to keep the wrapped book from sliding around inside the box, but at the same time isolating it (providing 'crush' room) from the box itself is probably the best best.

Insurance is a must, even recognizing the problems trying to collect from USPS.

Them's my thoughts...

'In' for a book. $150 seems like a deal. $15 flat rate / insured seems like the correct shipping option.

Update.

I checked and updated the Contributors and added an Errata to address errors. Fixed, replaced & resized photos. This is the Contributors' Proof edition.

Just before ordering the first shipment, I checked with a designer/publisher friend, who suggested that the 100# paper I'd used for the Author's Proof was excessive, and should try 80#. This would save some money as well. So I've ordered printing of one copy of the Contributor's Proof with 80# paper. Should have that 2/27.

Either way, I should know on 2/27 whether to use 80# or 100# paper, and can order the first batch, which I should have in early March. These will be the Contributors' Proof and will be limited to those that contributed to the book (don't confuse that with FAL Files Contributors.) I'll ask that owners of the Contributors' Proof look for glaring errors, and offer up any improved photos. We'll give that a month or so, which puts the book into early April for general release.

Thanks for the support!

I did not contribute to it in any way or form, but any book that has a chapter titled Century butthole is worth getting. In fact that should be made into a shirt or a cap.

CONGRATULATIONS for a significant achievement. From your topics listing, it looks like it will be the most comprehensive collector's guide ever published on the FAL. You have got to be on Cloud 9 right about now !

I remember how I felt back in 2004 when I saw the first bound copy of my FN-49 book - a great feeling to finally cross the finish line.

I bet that you have significantly underestimated the hours that you have in the book - probably by at least a factor of 2. I put about 2,500 hours in my 1st edition, and already have (by actual count) 1,250 hours in my upcoming second edition. You probably have hundreds (thousands?) of hours of research and other work that you're not including in that 2,000 hour estimate.

Put me down for a copy of your book

Congrats again to you and Kevin,

Goose

Your book 10x8"

USPS Regional Rate A, 11 x 13". Average $10, will never exceed MFRB @ $13 and by being a closer fit, less packing material.

So I recommend charging $13-14 ship, use regional rate A with no insurance. Use the "profit" from shipping to self-insure for the 1% chance of a book going missing. Ship on-line for free delivery confirmation.

ok - dimensions for regional rate box A2 (side open) are actually 10-15/16″ x 2-3/8″ x 12-13/16″

I've never found regional rate B to be better than the larger MFRB

USPS Regional Rate A, 11 x 13". Average $10, will never exceed MFRB @ $13 and by being a closer fit, less packing material.

So I recommend charging $13-14 ship, use regional rate A with no insurance. Use the "profit" from shipping to self-insure for the 1% chance of a book going missing. Ship on-line for free delivery confirmation.
I agree with one addition.

First, this box (the Mark mentions) should allow sufficient packing materials around the book to protect it and also prevent it from being too loose in the box.

My addition has to do with insurance. I don't worry much about lost-in-the-mail stuff. I do worry about damage in shipping (which, I suspect, might well be over 1%). I recommend 'you' (USPS) offer insurance for an additional fee. I know that I'd be willing to pay an additional, reasonable fee for insurance, even recognizing the problems with collecting from USPS.

It shouldn't take too long after shipping orders to get some feedback on shipping damage.

I can't wait for this! Not only because of the wealth of information inside, but because it was nog that turned me onto FAL's in the first place. Is there any way I could get a signed copy? Nog, will you be at the knob creek mgs this year? you have missed the last couple of years so I wasn't sure.
