I see retirement and pics of the rebuilt and refinished rifle as a suiting end to this incredible story.
Not only BLASPHEMY,,,would you strip the Battle Ribbons off a Veteran?
Ol'Dirty EARNED this carbon build up.

Several thoughts:

I think you should forward this thread and, all the photos to FN. Maybe they'll reward you with a left over 50.00 they have laying around in appreciation for demonstrating just how awesome the design still is. Maybe pay you big bucks to do a commercial for them.

Auction off chunks of carbon chiseled off of ol' Dirty here on the Falfiles for additional ammo purchase to see how far it'll really go. Special addition carbon chunk sealed in polymer, serialized and, autographed by James could do well on the auction block. Payment option in equivalent ammo to dollar ratio.

Just trying to help out with ol' Dirties retirement portfolio.

Looks like the carbon might be holding the whole thing together at this point... Never clean it!

Kinda like my truck... I'm afraid to wash it or all the rust holding it together might get confused and fall apart on me!

Yeah, I'd love to see a pic of that too. Is it so carbon packed that the rifling is indistinguishable I wonder?

I'm sure that some of the guys over at the Fort Benning weapons pool would dunk that rifle in one of the half 55 gal drums filled w/ the mixture of solvent and oil and God knows what else and after 15min w/ a steel brush, have that weapon shinning

Is there any chance that with so much carbon and junk clogging up all over the place that there could be a hazard to shoot this still?

I shot 7,000 rounds through a stock 10/22 before its first cleaning. Funny thing is after cleaned it did not shoot any better clean than dirty. I have an AR 15 that has not been cleaned in over 20 years, not kept up with rounds fired but guess its in the 10,000 plus range and has just started giving trouble. I believe it needs a new buffer and spring rather than cleaning. Going to swap those out before reverting to an actual bath. I hate cleaning guns and except for nice customs, avoid like plauge. My favorite 1911 comp gun gets 100 rounds a week minimum and has not been cleaned in a couple years. A little lubrication when start to feel like beginning to drag a bit and keep shooting.

A friend of mine has an AR-15 he has never cleaned. He has about 4,000 rounds through it and says he is not gonna clean it unless/until it gives problems.

I don't scrub my ARs either. And I shoot cast bullets in them.

James,
Being how I just recently moved to Jacksonville, I will bribe you with a steak dinner if I can be photographed taking just one shot out of Ol' Dirty.

Few people get to shoot a legend. I would like to be one of them.

Only 16,500? I was sure it had been 20,000 in the thread title and pushing 35k by like, a year or two ago.
Am I misremembering something else, or did you cave and clean her at some point, then start over?

James lives in Cedar Hill. I live and work in Jacksonville at the Gun Shop. James does visit from time to time and would probably be glad to let you shoot the rifle sometime.

Ya know, the only bad thing about this Ol' Dirty legend is that it basically means James cannot shoot corrosive ammo in it. I mean even a beautiful, pristine early Belgian could be shot with corrosive as long as it gets a good cleaning afterwards. But Ol' Dirty? Nope. The corrosive salts would not respect the history nor the legend. It would have to be cleaned, and Ol' Dirty would revert to being just another well-worn FAL.

How much NATO 7.62 x 51mm ammo is corrosive?

Come to the river shoot in January with your pocket full of ammo and you might get the chance to add to Ol' Dirty's total.

Just bring some old clothes and glasses!!

I'd like to request an update on Ol' Dirty's round count. The last update James posted was a batch of pictures dated August 2014, and I hope there's been some--or even a lot of--shootin' since then.

I'm wondering about the key-holing that was reported earlier. It may have worn the barrel out - with or without the "dirtiness". And if that is the case, he probably doesn't shoot it much anymore - not that fun to shoot (or spend the money on the ammo) when the results are so unpredictable.

But I, for one, would give a re-barrel a complete 'pass', since we expect a barrel to wear out sometime, and its replacement will not affect the wear or the dirtiness of most of the gun - or the function test that is currently of interest to everyone here.

James - my offer still stands to contribute ammo and/or cash to the ongoing test.

Ok I don't know what the last round count was that I posted or when I posted it but right now it's about 16,800 plus a 100 or so. Sometimes I forget to write down how many I shot that day. Dirty is kind of in hibernation as I haven't been shooting it much.

Still functions fine. Only question is how good is the bore? I guess I should put it on paper to see where it's shooting.

Ol' Dirty needed to be pointed out to me the times I saw her. Truly an unassuming ol' girl for being so famous and all.
On being offered to shoot her, I politely declined. I couldn't live with myself if I'd ended up being "that guy".

Looks like my photos are still showing up on page 9. I pay a small fee on Photobucket so maybe that is the reason. Not sure how long they will be there.

SITREP on Ol' Dirty:

Last night at dinner, James told me Ol’ Dirty was at 16,800 rounds without a cleaning.

Today at the North Texas shoot, James let me run her up to 16,820

I can personally vouch that Ol Dirty can still run through a 20 round mag without a hiccup, and (when I did my part) can routinely hit a 6" steel plate at 100 yards.

I was blessed with the opportunity to handle an FAL legend. Thank you sincerely James!
