Are you a hardcore gun owner?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ry-s-guns.html

I used to own a couple of pop guns but they went down with the boat!

I saw an earlier story from a while ago the the average gun owner had 8 firearms. Which sounds about right. Squirrel rifle, deer rifle, varmint rifle, goose gun, upland bird gun, and a couple of pistols, or some combination thereof.

I don't understand the obsession with number of guns owned. Most mass shooters have only had one or two. Can only use one at a time.

I don't have data other than my own observations, but yes that 8 number sounds legit for the most average hunter/outdoors type of guy.

22 rifle
22 pistol
deer rifle
shotgun
centerfire handgun
Something stray picked up as it was cheap or just cool.

Outside of that "basic 6", add on a couple more that were Dad's or Grandpa's, or an AR/AK, or a handgun for the wife, or a specialty goose/moose/spot shoot gun.

Yeah, probably a total of 8 is pretty common.

I don't understand your statement. Are you saying we should aspire to mimic mass shooters because it makes more sense to you?

Numbers are a symptom of variety. I certainly don't care nor would I assume others care much about how many firearms they own. What makes the grade is the desire to own many different types, especially when the history of the arm is the primary motivation of ownership. When it comes to military arms a single model can have a half dozen sub-models, the FAL being a great example of why so many of us own so many examples of the type.
And none of us are mass shooters. Go figure.

I agree with this, why does the number of guns owned matter? It's sensational I suppose. They want to show gun owners as "outliers", deviants, freaks, etc. They state that the vegas freak used 24 guns in his rampage... Really?

When I moved from Washington to New Jersey I first ran into the "why would anyone NEED more than one gun" argument. "Why wouldn't everyone WANT more than one gun" was my response Who could argue with that!

Grandpa always said to watch for the guy who only owned one rifle because he likely knew how to use it.

Not hard to do you inherit a few you pick up another deer rifle get a better shotgun get a carry permit pick up a few pistols to see which ones you like then 22s for cheap practice then next thing you know you got 20.

Yep, most news stories in my area about drug busts at homes usually have the suspect/renter's/owner's "arsenal of weapons" laid out on the bed for dramatic purposes. Usually a Crosman pump BB rifle in there for good measure.

Is Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) evil?

He owns 1000 guitars, I'm told and they're all *unregistered!*

Does anybody really need 1000?

I don't know whether they're *killer* guitars, but you get the idea...

I also sometimes wonder how things are going nowadays in Budokan.

I equate my gun safe to this:

There are several things in there called "pliars" and several things called "screwdrivers" and "wrenches" and "sockets" and etc etc blah blah blah...

Guns are tools. I may have several called the same thing, but there are differences between them that make them job specific. Let's explore the so-called "high-powered rifle." My .270 WSM Remmy 700 is a .5moa laser beam, and carries 1000ft/lbs of energy to about 1200yds. My M1a loaded manages about .8moa and carries that same energy to 750yds or so, a little less with the FAL with the 16" barrel, which might manage between 2-3moa. All "high-powered rifles" but little overlap in capabilities or accuracy or handiness. The bolt gun with a 26" barrel and big glass is great sitting still at long distances, but I'd hate to know my life depended on it to hold off a large group inside 500yds or so. The M1a is a bit handier, faster to fire and reload, but still 22" barrel plus flash hider and fairly large glass, but well suited for the above job. Inside 50-100 yds, however, it's still too cumbersome to be terribly effective. Time to breal out the FAL. 1-8x scope means it's good down near 10yds but effective to 400+, and is by far the lightest (albeit not "light") and most mobile of the 3. But, 3 different jobs, so 3 different tools for those jobs.

Quite simply you cant use a crescent wrench for everything.

Wouldn't it be better for majority of guns to be owned by a minority of gun owners. Imagine I load up contents of just one vault, mags and ammo to go with each and handed out at random. My personal count goes down but is my community safer with all those guns scattered to the winds. Good thing the hurricane caused my dock to dislodge from shore and during the melee the boat went to bottom of deep water. Who would have thunk all those boolits would make a boat sink so fast.

You guys have to go shooting with Hagar. He brings a good part of his collection in the back of his truck. He's unpacking gun cases and ammo from underneath old blankets and comforters for like 15 minutes. Then range day becomes a gun show and I end up seeing something in his stash that I like and I have to go out and buy it and my pile gets bigger too. I already bought two ARs and a 9mm CZ, both of which I swore I'd never be interested in. It never ends

funny, same here. When we have a "family shooting day", nobody brings anything but their carry pistol, and I seem to supply all the rifles and ammo.
I think it might be a bit unfair??

Shit, I stopped counting firearms a long, long, time ago.

Far easier to just count the number of gun safes.

It only took 3% of patriots to kick their ass back to England.

Just imagine what 3% can do today.

I can also remember the Brits' begging Americans for guns at the threat of German invasion too after the crown cracked down on them owning guns a few years prior for the sake of security.

17 of one model? 17 of one caliber? They need to be more specific on this hardcore stuff. They couldn't possibly mean 17 total. That's called a piker.

The number of NICS checks per month tell the real tale.

I own no guns.

The number of households that have guns is like 50%.

There are about 120 million households in the USA. That is 60 million gun owners, but usually more than one person lives in each household.

Population of 325 million; 3% is 9 million, and 60 million owners is 20%. That would be 5 guns per household with one or more owners.

I suspect that there are more like 100 million gunowners, holding 600 million guns. We devour ammo at an incredible rate.

That alone is despositive of that UK article being poorly reported.

NYS had only 43,000 EBR's registered; Ct 50,000.
Millions allegedly went un registered.

America has a fear of confiscation, and that paranoia drives gun sales.

I am a hardcore gun owner by anybody's definition and proud of it. I love my gun collection, some of which I bought here. I have everything I want except for buying a semi auto MAG 58 when/if FN finally gets them to market.

In lieu of the real deal, I'd injure myself whipping out the card to pay for such a piece.
