I know next to nothing about computers and software. I am currently using Norton and would like to find a new security and antivirus program.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ESET NOD 32, once yer machine is clean.
My "guru" put it on mine and I haven't had a lick of trouble since. Small footprint, little used in the way of resources and updates regularly, as in every couple hours!

Can't find an addy for 'em, so mebbe a search will find it.
HTH,
Paul

I use NOD32 as my primary but I also run MBAM occasionally and use Sandboxie if I have reason to visit sites I think may not be safe.

Thanks for the information guys.

Andy C was nice enough to give me his recommendations also.

We will check them out and decide which will be best for us. I know zip about computers. I have to wait until my oldest son comes around to install things for me.

Thanks again

AVG free is free, works great, and dosent bog your system down.
Been using it for years, and sell the paid version.

Is it just me, but with the way Symantec/Norton products hog memory, I think they are the viruses?

I also use ESET NOD 32 happily

Skeeterbay, be sure to go to the Symantec web site and download and run their "Norton Removal Tool". Otherwise, if you use the Windows uninstall, Norton will leave behind all sorts of funny things that can still disrupt your computer. It gets into places the standard uninstall doesn't get to.

Computer gurus, am I right or not?

You're definitely right. Norton can be difficult to uninstall cleanly....The removal tool helps a lot.

StarPD thanks for the heads up on Norton. I will have my boy do that for me.

Again thank you to everyone for the information. It's greatly appreciated!

Norton, there is your problem right there.

My old man bought a computer, a laptop recently. I warned him about that Norton anti virus and it's total failure to do it's job. He didn't listen.

Six months later, his computer is fraught with trouble.

I use AVG free (it's alright I guess) and crap cleaner, which seems to do more than about anything I've tried. Just make sure with AVG you deny them a space on your toolbar. I hate when I have a big screen and half of it is taken up by the toolbar and such.

I had a guy in here (one of those geeks) to fix the PC's in the house. He told me that Norton are way behind the curve on anti-virus programs. AVG is marginally better. He installed a free anti-virus program generally regarded (at least according to him) to be one of the best. It's called Avira.
