AMD-65 started as a well used kit on MP, compliance parts from guys on the Files and receiver from Court. She was assembled and refinished by Ken Kubin, Files member roach46.

Go with Nodak or akreceivers.

Great looking rifle 1MOR. Looking forward to getting home myself. Pristine AMD-65 kit waiting to get built to compliment my pristine AMD-63.

Anybody considering an AMD-65 project, the recent imports on FEG receivers look to be of decent quality at a fair price, and probably cheaper than spending $300 - $400 for a kit, plus compliance parts plus another ~$200 for assembly and refinish. Plus, you get a Hungarian AK with a Hungarian receiver. Should be a collectors item in the future.

I agree on the selection of a NoDak receiver, but I purchased the ITM receiver when Harlan was working for FAC and Mike was turning out FAL receivers and 1911 pattern 357s. That is to say, the receiver had been in my safe, long before NoDak had been in business. The kit was ratty, dirty but had a pristine barrel and all numbers matched. The builder did have some issues with the receiver, but that is why you would want an experienced builder putting your stuff together.

No slam intended intended on the guys that can put stuff together and make it run, great on you!!

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as bashing ITM/OOW. They are good receivers and I have built many a AK on them. But for the $50+ you'll spend on an OOW/ITM you would be better served buying a Nodak. Both take a fair amount of work building, touching up, and fitting.

Hey, no problema and I didn't take it that way, so no apology necessary. I just wanted to say that I used what I had and Ken turned a sow's ear into an evil black AK! Usually, receivers are hardened at the pin holes, this one had been completly hardened. Ken had to use a carbide mill to open it up for the folder block and for the rear sling slot. The ITM logo kinda adds a Commie touch. I now use Nodaks for AK projects, best receiver and best cutomer service in the business. Got a box of full of Nodaks ready for the next project. Hmmm, Romy SF, Rommy UF, couple of Poles, couple of RPKs....... Decisions decisions!!

How did you do your rear sling loop? That's the last thing I need to do to my old kit to finish it. Thanks!

Rear sling swivel came from a Weaponeer.com group buy a few years ago. Have not seen them anyplace else.

Thank you for the reply! I haven't had any luck tracking one down, so I figured I would have to fab something from my parts box and TIG weld it to the side of the receiver.

I would do a google search, one of the smaller AK parts suppliers must have some. Then I would do a search on the AK forums. Most of the AK forums are pretty quiet but barfcom's AK forum seems to be doing quite well these days. You can also try a WTB in the appropriate places. If you find one, you will need to slot the receiver and insert from the inside, then tack both tabs to the receiver.

AMD65.

I have an IM AK74 receiver that I bought a few years ago because the dealer told me all I needed to do was open up the magazine well - so I could build a Romy "G" Kit. Obviously it won't work. The receiver is well made; if I ever get around to building an AK74, I'm all set!

Last I looked/purchased, KVAR had the sling loops. Gotta' dig a little or call them. I also bought a few of the rear cutoffs (folder, trunnion, stub and sling loop) for $15.00 total. I then just took the loop from this donor. You cannot just bend out the tabs, though, they'll just break off. Heat them up slightly while you do this. It took me a little practice at first.

Good Luck. Leland

I went the AMD-65 SBR route using a FEG receiver and a brand new kit most likely unfired.

Finally got her to the range today. Rain is rare down here this time of the year. Guess what, it rained about half an hour after arriving continuing for the next three hours. I took it over to the handgun bays and had a go at a couple of leftover and well soaked handgun targets set out at 15 yards. She ran well with no burps or hiccups, feeding 100 rounds of Silver Bear, rapid fire from five different 20 round steel Hungarian mags. The centers of these two targets were successfully terminated. I had noticed some flame around the front sight while firing. The RO later commented that my AK was shooting rather large flames from the muzzle(TAPCO AMD)device. Of course, there was no recoil and the Tapco G2 FCG was very smooth. Some of the firing was done trying to guess a cheekweld on the folding wire stock and the rest was done by supporting the weapon by the two pistol grips and taking a sight picture over the top, with the stock open and the stock closed. The AMD-65 is a solid personal defense weapon, limited to close encounters by the short sight radius and primitive stock. This weapon would benefit from an accessory red dot type optical sight.

Try shooting it one-handed for something a bit more challenging.
The weight CAN be an issue.
I like mine a lot. Fun little plinker.
I wouldn't call it a target weapon.
The ergonomics aren't really designed that way.

Will give that a try next range trip! May also give it a try holding it sideways, one handed

We were specifically told that the muzzle brake and everything else was designed to make it mimic that more than one person was there.

Remember Hungary only had an army of 50k about and the big nasty muzzle brake made it sound like maybe 3 or 4 were there.....

it did the job......but it is fun to watch that huge flame at night

I'm in the process of building one now, with a Nodak receiver. My kit (from Gunthings.com) came with a Romanian barrel. I bought one of the long Tapco AMD-style muzzle breaks for compliance purposes, and am thinking of having the Romy barrel shortened before I do the build, so the rifle will be legal, but not too long.

Nice AMDs, IMOR and Rudolf!
