I don't own a woo, but I like it.

Have you ever considered making a top rail for the FAL that would utilize the carry handle slot and gas tube nut as mounting points? I would really like to have a scope rail that would allow the use and removal of the standard carrier dust covers

Boy Josh...you truly have love for the Woo! Thanks for putting the RD and time into all of your products.

The only question is how does this set up affect weight and balance of the gun? I'm pretty sure that it will look hairy on a short barreled woo and when it is finished to match the gun.

Nice work.
So, at this point are the two receiver holes the sole attaching points for this ?
Or, is there something we don't see that attaches, or clamps to the barrel, or gas tube, or both ?

It looks good, but maybe kind of massive. A series of holes, round or oblong, in the non-rail areas might make it look and be lighter, as well as help out on cooling.

Also, if the top rail were to sit down on, or nearly on the receiver top, it might stiffen the mounting as well as make it look more like it were an integral part of the Daewoo as delivered. As opposed to a bolt on aftermarket piece.

i think it needs to have the profile of your low profile scope mount. it will look more integrated and allow you to still use your iron sights. also you should be able to make the walls thinner to cut down on weight.

any idea of price range?

Like I said, this is a rough prototype.
The top rail will be lower. There will be vent holes.
Being shiny it actually looks bigger than it is. It is pretty comfortable is it sits and will be lighter in production.
The lock-in points are the 2 threaded holes in the top of the receiver, 1 threaded hole in the bottom of the receiver where the barrel pin is, and an interlocking ring that mates with the front of the receiver which prevents any twisting.
The main lower part is pretty thin with a flange at each end so it may look thick in the pics.
I am going to keep it under $200 or I won't put it into production.

ETA: Oh yeah Josh might consider, depending on cost, extending the handguard all the way to the front sight bridge. Loosing the front sling loop wouldn't be a problem with all the clamp on swivels that are available.

I Nice work. Couple of comments though. I know that everyone and their brother is putting all kinds of "cooling" slots in their rails, which also reduces weight, but I'm wondering just how effective they are. They do increase surface area, but is this a real advantage or theoretical? Ball end mill lightening cuts may increase surface area and reduce weight almost as much as through cuts without making 50 holes to catch dirt.

A complaint I have with handguards full of holes is they are freaking nightmare to clean if you get in the mud. I know most armchair commandos don't have to worry about this, but it is something to think about.

Also, I agree on making it as low as possible - It appears from a manufacturing cost stndpoint that maintaining a circular profile is a significant cost savings, But I for one hate wide handguards. It looks like you could reduce the rail height all around - then maybe a helicoiled nylon tipped set screw to tension the part over the receiver, since it might have more flex if thinner.

Just a voice from the peanut gallery.

Having recently built several AR front ends for friends, we have decided full length rails on all four sides are overkill. The most popular FF tube we have used is the YHM with smooth sides, and addon top, bottom and forward rails. The smaller diameter FF tube, with short (2"-3") rails on the front at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock position are what most users like for a bipod or flashlight/laser mount.

The guys who want top and bottom full length rails can get what they want.

Not everybody needs or likes 4 sided cheesegrater frontends.

Just saying, and YMMV.

I like the thinner handguards myself. The side rails are secured by button head cap screws from the inside so they are removable. I might change the bottom so it secures like the factory Daewoo freefloat forend so the bottom rail can be removed by the customer.
It may look like a thick all milled piece but the lower part is .062 aluminum which is pretty light and very stiff. similar to the Vltor CASV handguard.

excellent. Personally, I only use the top rail for night vision, and a 1" section on the left for a flash light, so I agree the rest of the handguard rails would be unneeded. Being able to add a rail where needed and not add if I don't want it, is nice.

Also find out how much more it would add to the price to use stainless helicoils in the Aluminum. or some other method to not be anchoring to aluminum.

I would be more interested in a short rail that fit in front of the existing handguard, locking to both barrel and gas tube above it. I like the existing handguard, but wouldn't mind something secure that'd blend with the rifle just in front of it.

what would you mount on it? a light? i think that would be way too forward to comfortably mount a vfg.

I like it but agree it should be lower and I would suggest making it smaller/thinner, less bulky.
I guess you could say make it "more sleek"
You might think about enclosing the front end also.

Still waiting on my Ace pistol grip so I can use your adapter on my DR200.

I wanted to keep the front open for cooling and also no contact with the barrel.
The handguard is only 1/2" wider than the factory forend.
I am still working on the design.
The bottom section is made of formed of .062 aluminum sheet, the front support makes it look thicker than it is.

I am afraid it won't fit the K1 as the top rail locks into the scope mounting holes. Also the barrel trunnion area is different. If I had a K1 I would make a forend like the Korean prototype.

a big plus for the cooling slots I have found out that woos tend to run hot also I think the lower the top rail the better. If you need a tester for one I would like to have one . I will buy one as soon as you have it up on your site thanks scott

Couldn't remember if I posted I have added cooling slots to both upper and lower sections.
I tell you guys going back to school is great but WOW it is hard to keep up with regular production let alone new products!

Yes, The grip is from ACE. Hopefully they will have them in stock soon.

What is the approximate weight of the new forend?
I love the original handguards on the Daewoo, but they don't leave a lot of options for mounting a light!

Plus the original ones seem a touch fragile.

I will have the weight this weekend.
The parts are all milled and ready but I am looking for a replacement air compressor for blasting these prior to anodize. Amazing how equipment picks just the right time to bail.
