Dusting off the 03, 03A3s and 03A4

Time of year to start getting ready to make some smoke on the range.

Top is an 03A4 repro from James River
Next down is an 03A3 repro from James River
Next two are Rem 03A3s from CMP
Last on bottom but not least is my 03 Springfield with Lyman rear sight.

Very nice collection. My first centerfire rifle at age 16 a whole lot of years ago was a $100 1903 Springfield I made weekly payments on until it was paid for. It's been so long I'm not even sure what maker it was but I think Smith Corona. Now 45 years later I decided I want another one but I'm doing it the hard way starting with a beat to shit drill rifle action. Welded magazine cutoff, plugged and welded barrel, etc. I must be completely out of my mind.

My introduction to the 1903 was in boot camp in early 1966. We had one with a rope sling and had to hang onto it for 90 minutes in the pool for drown proofing.
Being a country boy, it wasn't too difficult but the city guys and colored recruits made it look hard.

Still can't feel my fingers.

My log shows it 1998 when I last shot this one. I got new eyes last year from the VA.

Beautiful.

I guess I better get me a couple. The way things are going, they may be the only things we can shoot anymore.

But they have a bayonet lug so they must be assault rifles. Well, if they were the assault rifle of 1917. Once an assault rifle , always an assault rifle. What is a bolt? What is a barrel? Wooden stocks so they can be used to beat innocents. Must ban all magazine for the 1903s that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition that could be used in a semi-automatic AR-15. Makes no sense to anyone with even an iota of knowledge, but to others it can be a talking point.

Fantastic from the point of a shooter.
I have had this one for a few years now. Adjusted the scope when I first brought it home from Camp Perry and haven't needed to change or adjust it since. About 1500 rnds through it now and more stable than most.
I shoot AR-500 prairie dogs at 150 yds and haven't missed one of the twelve out there in a couple of years at least. I shoot it prone with a rest most of the time. With the Criterion barrel, it runs right about 1 moa consistently.
