DAMN--- and a great 2Nd Amendment supporter and All round great American --!! God speed Gunny !!!

Ermey, who was an NRA board member, said at the time that his association with the organization and his disapproval of President Obama cost him acting jobs.

"Do you realize I have not done a movie in five to six years? Why? Because I was totally blackballed by the ... liberals in Hollywood," he alleged. "They can destroy you. They're hateful people [who] don't just not like you, they want to take away your livelihood ... that's why I live up in the desert on a dirt road ... I don't have to put up with their crap."

If my memory isn't failing me I first saw Ermey in the movie Apocalypse Now. He was portraying a LOACH helicopter pilot.....

My favorite movie that he starred in was Siege of Firebase Gloria.

And so it goes.

Stood in line for over an hour at the Glock booth back in 2009 or so to meet him and exchange a few words. He was very friendly and patient with everyone. Another of the good guys gone.

Noooooooo! He'll always be remembered for his military roles but he was frigging hilarious in "The Frighteners" as a Marine ghost and a televangelist in "Fletch Lives".

Always been convinced that if he hadn't been in FMJ the movie would have been just another one of Kubrics bizarre off the wall films, Ermey made that movie. Too many great lines he spouted off in that movie to bother to try and quote. Going to have to watch it tonight in his honor.

Be actually ad libbed most of his lines. Be had a script, but he just ignored it, and Kubrik let him, for the most part (Kubrik insisted on keeping the sir sandwiches and having the enlisted gunny addressed as “sir”). He actually was a drill instructor in real life, Kubrik reasoned that he knew what he was doing, so that whole segment was supposedly how he actually ran his platoons. I heard from a few people who were there when he was, they just said “there was some wierd shit going on over there” in reference to his platoon. He also did most of it with a broken rib, he rolled his jeep on the way to the studio but just kept working.

Can't say for sure about Marine Corps boot camp, but in the Navy you call the DI (or company commander) "sir" even though they are enlisted. Any time outside of boot camp you will elicit the "I work for a living" thing.

RIP Gunny. You will be missed.

Met him about 13 years ago. Shared a smoke break under a tree in Quantico while I was there for the Modern Day Marine trade show. Top bloke, very down to earth and a good laugh. RIP Gunny, you made the world a better place.

He co-founded our local micro-brewery, Bravery Brewing Co.

http://braverybrewing.com/home.html

No doubt, there will be a memorial service there to this local hero.

Shocked - he deserved to out live and out-bad-ass all of us.

Just the past year, they released "The Gunny" - pretty damned exactly my preference in an ale: kind of a hoppy, dark ale. (bitter and dark unlike Gunny)
