Just got an e-mail from Robmac and he is doing fine. No damage, just old age. He has been relaxing with a good cigar and properly aged amber colored adult beverage to allow his bad knees to recover. All in all he sounds like he has joined the ranks of old, semi-cripple, men who still think they can when their body says they shouldn't. Anybody else in this catagory?

Pain, ---- not just for middle aged guys----I'm still recovering. I also was blocked from the internet for the last week. Phone company said it was a "wiring mistake". THATS why I've not been here gloating, just "a little".
It was great see'n ya'll again .
Thanks to all for the gifts and kind words.
I plan on being in better physical shape next year, as I was embarrassed at how winded I got after the second run. I also will leave a mag or two behind next year.

Thanks Stimpy , for putt'n on the best fal match east of the mississippi.
[ and I only beat ya by ONE point in the target sec, so don't feel TOO bad---]

now the rest of ya---sans HIll and Hagar, out shot by a middle aged woman? Thats GOT to be motivating-- See ya'll next year--

Maybe for the others, but I get outshot by middle age women, young women, teenagers, preteens, old men, cripples, and the list goes on. I just look for improvement over what I did last year.

I too, have set a goal to be in better shape for next year. Problem is that better shape may be much more orb like instead of cylindrical.

It is an honor to be beaten by the likes of you. I'll try harder next year to give you better competition -

I promise not to leave four prone shots in the mag next year.

I had a great time shooting with you, and I had a good time getting whooped at the pool table by you. And everyone else.

Gentlemen, that right there is funny! I won't/can't excuse me own self. Had I been shootin', she'd a whooped me too!

Glad to hear RobMac is on the mend, I was worried about him.

I think this was my favorite year. Oh sure there have been years I have won...it would be easy to choose one of those.

But never has there been a year I can remember where everyone was so happy.

I have said it before, and folks have both praised and doubted my statements of such, but this match is about US. The folks here on the files. That we share some common love, or common like, for this rifle, is almost secondplace. In my years here I have met so many good people, and so few bad, that I view it as a matter of faith that I can host this match and all will be well.

Kara...you will be less than surprised to hear this is not the first time a woman has bested me in a rifle match. My heart swells at such defeats, be they done by maids yet 17 or those with perhaps a few more winters.

In the words of one of my favorite wordsmiths "And those who have no swords can still die upon them. Would you have the folk of Gondor gather herbs only, when the Dark Lord gathers armies? And it is not always good to be healed in body. Nor is it always evil to die in battle, even in bitter pain. Were I permitted, in this dark hour I would choose the latter'."

Press on, my sister, the men will eventually catch up.

You sir, are TOO kind in your statement "for those with a FEW more winters than a 17 yr old."
Though on my good days, I can still pretend to be 17. [ it was a good year for me ]
UNTIL my body reminds me of the intervening decades.

How did you know I'm elven?? I had my ears done.[ I know the war princes of Gondor human, but I resemble that remark-]

All farmers are elves just like all smiths are dwarves. Jill has argued against this with me, she doesn't see me being like Gimli, but it is only because she hasn't read the books. I have no doubt I am a child of Aule.

And had it occurred to me I would have asked for a small box of soil from your garden. Yes that idea amuses me.

I took a handful of coke from my blacksmithing teachers forge on my last day there, he laughed.

The 17 yo reference was to Katie Harris, a local shooter who is maybe 17 now. She has been nationally ranked in 3-gun the last few years and I was proud to find out I was a target she wanted to beat at one point. But rest assured I don't think of you as a day over 30. ;P

Well, for all you young lads and lassies, some of us know we are going to be beat because our bodies have already rebelled at being treated harshly in the spring of our lives. My peronal goal was achieved this year in that I had less than twice the shots fired as the required shots to hit. And it was significantly less. So I will continue to practice and maybe next year will only carry a 500 round belt instead of my normal thousand rounder.

Now I have to get into shlomo's frame of mind. So next year you'll be hearing chant, "Don't miss, don't miss.....". I'll do this one since Front sight, Back sight, Target takes to much time.

Stimpy, this years match really was super. The auto steel was neat and worked very well saving a lot of effort from the scorers and resetters. And I believe this is the first match where we didn't have a major weapon malfunction/disassembly or wardrobe faux pax.

When is the NEXT match scheduled? (had to be the first)

I too see the wisdom and utility in Shlomo's approach. I will be doing my best to emulate at the next match.
So what is the date for the next one ??? Feb14th ?, Jan 25th??, given RBGC pushed it forward, from the warm time, [ where I could swim while down there ] to where we are now--just want to know if I need to sew some mag pouches to my parka. just kidding, as the colder it is, the better my chances with you southern guys.

Tac , thanks again for the shirt, already have had some intresting comments, and LOOKs when down in "town".

Shlomo does not chant, "Don't miss, don't miss." Shlomo looks at the post, and eagerly seeks stuff to perch on it while breaking the trigger.

Well, you've already admitted to passive aggressive tendencies and actions. So I'd say, no.

And what's this "Underground" shit you speak of?

My post in general didn't bear any fruit, so I thought I would troll my own thread here.

Just a reminder I am once again walking (well I run my two-hour midnight to 2am shift) in the local 'Relay for life' to get some funds to battle cancer.

Any donations, even small ones, are appreciated.

Donated.

Dr. Jeff says more push-ups and pull-ups; less running. Your spleen will thank you.

I have added burpees and pull-ups to my regimen after my performance at the Spartan race. Burpees are evil, but I can already tell they are working.

Why does my spleen hate running?

I meant pancreas.

Anyway, I don't think it hates running, but it appears that resistance exercise (lifting weights or your body as a weight), as opposed to cardio, is the best thing you can do to sensitize your body to insulin - meaning you have to take less of it - whether you are injecting or relying on the body to create it.

I first read this in a medical white paper out of a diabetes clinic in Florida - not advertising, not anything except medical research, number of participants, study parameters, medical mumbo jumbo, and a buncha terms that I had to look up. I believed it.

Running isn't necessarily bad for you, but being in oxygen debt a lot of the time has the opposite effect on your insulin production and/or sensitivity iirc. This is not the article I referred to (I read several), but it has some of the same conclusions:

http://care.diabetesjournals.org/con...1/8/1353.short

But this one seems to say that 'endurance trained' athletes (young, non-obese women in this study) have a longer lasting (though different type/effect) result than 'resistance trained' subjects. This doesn't, as near as I can tell, talk about the type of training, or the blood-oxygen-saturation levels during the resistance training:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10902794

I'm not a doctor, but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express about ten years ago...

Sounds like a lotta work to me.

I get all I need by jumping to conclusions, pushing my luck, and flying off the handle.

It's the "flying off the handle" that creates most of the resistance and work.

Since you brought it up and Stimpy is talking about pull-ups and burpees - I'll take this chance to plug an awesome workout I found last year: You Are Your Own Gym

It's all bodyweight stuff, and does a great job balancing strength, endurance, and full range of motion. I bought the book, but he has versions on video and iPhone apps and stuff. I can't recommend it highly enough - but don't just download the app and choose random workouts. Buy the book, and READ the book - the information behind the workouts are as important as the workouts themselves.

Plus I figure everybody is tired of listening to me beat the YOGA drum, so I'll throw something else out there :-)

Crap, I used to do security fence scaling, third floor break ins, and door jacking for fitness. Was that wrong?

Nope - that is oh so right. The rest of us are just jealous and have to make do with burpees and let-me-ups.

I can't recommend it highly enough - but don't just download the app and choose random workouts. Buy the book, and READ the book - the information behind the workouts are as important as the workouts themselves.

Plus I figure everybody is tired of listening to me beat the YOGA drum, so I'll throw something else out there :-)
Done!

Oh and I got a Yoga DVD also, haven't tried it yet.

Jeez - getting you to buy a workout book is like helping Rob buy a better barrel for his FAL. What was I thinking...

You did inspire me to dust it off and start again though. I did one of the 10-week programs last year, but have been on other things lately. Last night was day 1, week 1: one-armed push-ups, pull-ups, military press, and let-me-ups (like upside-down push ups). It's a good kind of sore today. Tonight is core/legs.

Holy cow that workout is pretty nasty.

I had to back off a bit today since I have a race in the morning and don't want to have the legs all sore at the start.

But I look forward to getting through a couple weeks of intermediate and then we'll see how things are going.

It sounds harder than it is. You can vary the intensity quite a bit depending on how high you place your hands or feet. It doesn't matter what level of intensity you do - as long as you work at YOUR limit. But yes, soreness is to be expected - especially for the first week or so.

Good luck in your race tomorrow! We're expecting a full report -

Guys - thanks so much for your conceren - just read the above posts- but really, I am just fine. Went to the doc the Tuesday following the Match. X-rays say my knee is just plumb wore out - about bone on bone. Too much running, weightlifting, karate, parachute jumps, etc, the doc tells me. I am going to hold off 10 years for a replacement if I can.

So next year I suppose I will have to stroll through the match. So I would like to propose the following classes for next year's match:

Stock - rifle as delivered from the factory

Optics - as above but with scope or red dot mounted

Non-Stock - henceforth to be known as the "Mall Ninja Class" - requires rail Hg's, laser's, lights, second pistol grips, a minimum 3-50 x 1200 adjustable scope with a 45 degree back-up red dot scope, and 50 round drum mags in any caliber - preferably using one of the new 22LR conversion kits (see the
AR15.com web-site for guidelines in building up a rifle for this exciting new class!)

Walking Wounded - me and Tac-40 and some of you others. Will require medical evaluation as proof of your infirmity, but will be scored as (score +100)/(time - 3 minutes) to level the field

A few years back, I was talking about the older, heavier guys who "waddled" thru the course. Now, I R 1.

Karma is a bitch.

Well, you ain't fine but I'm glad to hear you didn't have to be cut on the next week. Watching that knee swell as fast as it did puckered me arse.

Just got one ammendment to your proposal.

visible verification (scars) with audible verification (clicking popping or any other internal noise) and/or tactile verification (grinding, roughness or displacement) may be used in lieu of medical documentation. The Match Director will be the final authority on this determination.

Yep, next year knee pads and ace wraps may become de rigueur for you. Followed by ice packs between stages.

"Tactile verification" sounds just a little too intimate to me - glad I'm not the match director!!!
