Hard to find good ones here in MI. I may have to start trapping my own as there are apparently some in the rivers around me.

When they're done boiling, throw some ice in the water. It makes them shrink and absorb more of the spices in the water.

Church is having their annual boil this weekend. If I die with half a tail hanging out of my mouth those who know me will know I was happy when I went.

I got turned on to mud bugs down in Vicksburg Mississippi years ago. Been thinking lately about how to trap them myself. Anyone got a good trap idea?

What PMF said- the ice trick works. Also, crack some eggs into the boil and let them poach. Then fish them out and snack on them whilst waiting for the crawdads to float. They really soak up some spice!
I love living in central Louisiana- we're surrounded by crawfish/rice fields and get to eat them all season!

What is the name of that place over Lake Charles by the bridge. I think it’s the steamboat or something. She order them and I got red beans and rice. Could watch her eat and they are stinky. Ya see I don’t eat food from the water but maybe a good piece of fried catfish

1/2 mesh fence material make your own, or there are plenty already made. Crawfish are in every body of water around here, just remember they like fresh meat. The little suckers like watermelon too, believe it or not!

Crawfish have been amazingly proliferate across the nation. I've seen them in the high mountain lakes in Arizona and in acequias near me in New Mexico. Don't know about the Rio Grande but I wouldn't know why not.
Those little bugs are like blackberries - grow from coast to coast.

Bloody disgusting mess, that. Like eating swimming locusts. I'd rather eat 100 year old C-rats than that nasty crap.

I once trapped a whole bunch in a wire mesh minnow pot in the pond behind my house. Boiled them up with some blue crab seasoning. Not bad! We have the big bugs from Long Island Sound. Lots more meat in ‘em, don’t have to eat as many.

We went crawdad fishin' every time it rained in our neighborhood growing up. The bar ditches were full of their "chimneys". Usually we caught them one at a time, on a string lowered into the hole. We tied a bit of fresh bacon on the string. One day, in a flash of inspiration, I took a 3 foot square piece of window screen and tied bacon in the center. We lowered the screen into the ditch and pulled it up later with several crawfish stuck by their legs in the screen. Economy of scale!

Would probably eat them in gumbo if it didn't have the claws in it and stuff, but just by themselves wouldn't unless I had to.

Darrel's is in Lake Charles....on Loop 210. The sandwiches are pretty damned good. If you make that run.....keep going East on I-10 to the Hwy165 exit...head South about 1 or 2 miles to Rabideaux's. Better boudain then they have in Scott along with one of the best sausages and cracklins.

As far as restaurants in Louisiana go there are some good ones, but expect them to be a little watered down....if you can eat at someone’s home all the better....

You can buy the tails already peeled. I wouldn't make a gumbo with them, but an etouffee, bisque, or crawfish stew are always good choices. Just make sure you buy Louisiana crawfish tails, and not those imported from China, Spain, or other non-U.S. locales.

with mayo and tomatoes that is mighty fine. Problem I’ve aleays had with Cajun food is no real cornbread or hush puppies. In Mississippi we mixed all that stuff up. We ate white bread rolls and loaf bread for sandwiches but a special good red beans and ham didn’t have any rice. It was cornbread with some onions and chow chow

God gave us sharp front toofs. Because we're carnivores. We eat meat. As in carcasses. Not frikkin insects and grubs.

Odd crawdad thing here in '09-10, locally our lake (Central Wa. state) was infested with huge crawdads (8 to 10 inches from tail to claw) they were some kind of hybrid that was dumped in the lake and took off like crazy. Fish and game wanted them gone, but wouldn't allow people the trap them because they weren't a native species? Anyways peeps I know were trapping them left and right on private property and well... they were... ahem... tasty like "rock lobster", they seemed to dwindle rapidly, so I kinda wonder if they were warm weather variety from down south that cant take the freeze here.

The trick to crawfish is knowing how to peel them rapidly. I know people who've tried them, thrown up their hands, and quit long before they got through their first pound. I'm usually on pound six or seven by that point and going back for thirds.

One of my crawfishing buds had three older sisters. Sometimes, the younger two of them would ask to go with us. No girls, especially sisters, were invited! Well, one Saturday morning while watching cartoons, I hear a knock on the door. There stands Joe's sisters, with a big-ass galvanized bucket.
"Look what we caught!" I peered down into that bucket and saw the biggest damned crawdad I'd ever seen. That thing looked a foot long to me, and was red as a dick on a dog. The girls were grinning from ear to ear..."See? We don't need y'all to go crawfish' with us. We're doing better than y'all are!" Huh. Showed us, they did. Damn old girls. ![]()

I like them. Especially with a dash of garlic salt. Mmmm. Mmmm.
Whoever was asking about how to catch them, there are a couple different store bought traps that can be had. Even a regular minnow trap will catch crawdads. Much easier if you can put a rock near the entrance/exit hole so they can climb into it easier. |
