Pecos RnG AAR

For those inquiring minds.

I liked the course.

The weather was fair, 84 when i started and maybe 90 or so when i finished. A storm tried to blow in around 2pm so it seems to cool off some.

It was well marked and a good distance. It was fairly flat and the sand didn't seem that bad this year. It had two creek crossings.

I'd say it lent itself to runners. Al ran it 64 minutes.

There was a good mixture of shooting, moving and thinking.

The stages were good, the targets a good size and at good distances. This also lent themselves to fast poodle shoots.

I struggled with my shooting. I completed 5 stages and timed out on stage 6. I was spent physically by stage 6 and could not hold my rifle steady.

Maybe i wasn't 100% from Rockcastle. When i finished, i had to sit down because i got really light headed. It also took me a good hour to recover.

Overall i did OK.

I stepped off with about 43 pounds of gear.

I took 100rds. of rifle and 90rds. pistol.

I shot 75 rifle and 70 pistol.

Carried 2L of fluids and drank maybe .75L

Consumed 2 Goo packets.

I must not have tried hard enough. Because i was only a little stiff coming home and I'm not sore today. Or it could be i'm in better shape.

Nah, it couldn't be that.

Mike - I saw only two .308s all weekend. Your FAL and Bruce D's M1a. I don't know what the difference between the two is, but your FAL dang near spun our steel rifle targets!

My other half - Daniel took first place, I took second, my buddy Nick (that I traveled with) took fourth. Daniel's dad took home the trophy for the oldest guy to complete the course.

It was a great run as always, though the math part seems to have frustrated some folks.

Cecil cooked steaks for the ROs, it was awesome!

2AM windstorms Thursday and Friday nights were not awesome. I brought back several pounds of Texas in my clothes, tent, mags....

This is the third time the event has been held at this location. It's probably five miles, pretty flat, mostly sand, really a fast run compared to the "old place". (that was about 7 tough miles, with longer rifle distances)

Final scores aren't up yet, and there are still a lot of pics to be added, but here's the link:

Thanks to Smokey, Larry, and Cecil (plus a bunch of folks too numerous to name them all) for putting up with us at another GREAT event!

Hensch won overall?!? Outstanding!!!

43lbs of gear, one of only two .308s, and exactly one week after running and working his butt off at Rockcastle for three days - Mike is most definitely a beast!!! And most definitely in better shape.

Me? I went swimming a few times. That was it.

Well, Nick and I got to swim in the Pecos river....retrieving steel targets at the end of the day.

Good job Al.

I seen that gentlemen.

I ran on his heels all day.

My guess would be it's the difference between a 16" and 22" barrel.
