Cleaning wood, saving rack #s?

I read some of the wood cleaning threads, but not sure I saw where some inch wood has been cleaned up without wiping out any painted rack numbers.
Any tips on best cleaning or refin method for this?

I've used straight BLO with good results. It carries lots of gunk away and livens up the wood, but leaves paint alone. YMMV
Might try a little bit on a Q-tip first.

Good old fashioned cheap Vaseline "cleans" wood good enough without any damned chemical leaching of any original finish left under the verdigris.

Guess you'll have to mask the rack #. Not sure why it matters. Either just clean it up or finish it.
