Did you use a whole box of shells for that one dove?

3 shots, 1 bird

This morning however I witnessed my hunting buddy drop two birds with one shot from a 20ga. He did miss 3 prior, so he is still batting 50%.

Got my 1st dove of the year last week, no shots fired and precooked. Stupid bastige landed on the transformer behind the house. three hours no power.

Almost had to fire the welder up so Coffee Vixen could get her fix.

Many birds flew up on us before we saw them. I got 2 birds 6 shots, my son 4 birds 7 shots. Just hunted the afternoon. In the trees along the river.

I thought that was part of the fun. Wish I could go. It's been over 20 years

Had a blast. Shot:bird ratio was not awesome but better than a day in the office.

About a foot. They fly at 45 mph. You have the keep your your swing (follow through) going. Follow them down to the ground after you hit them.

A foot?

45 mph is 66 fps. Assume you are shooting 1350 fps shells, like Remington Nitros. At 30 yards, it takes .066 seconds for the shot column to get there. Multiply that by the speed of the bird, and the lead is 4.4 feet. No?

Most people shoot behind, including me, early in the season, especially when I blow off skeet practice all summer. I literally pay for that in missed birds and wasted shells on opening day. Everyone does.

Couple suggestions:

1. Pattern your gun at the distance you have been missing. 20 yards? Step off 60 feet and look at the size of the cloud you are throwing. That will help give you a sense of how big your fly swatter is. This will help you adjust your lead when you miss.
2. Consider running a couple boxes of high brass #6's at the start of a hunting day. These retain more energy at max range and, if you hit the bird, they will generally go down. This will give you better feedback on the difference between hits and misses when adjusting your lead.
3. Start looking at this as batting or driving practice. Practice your follow through. Start tracking the bird with your head first, then mount your gun TO YOUR CHEEK NOT YOUR SHOULDER. If you keep your nose pointed towards the bird and learn to bring your gun to your cheek in motion, you will hit more birds.

It has been said that rifles are science and shotguns are voodoo. I think that is true to the extent that we remain ignorant to the wide variety of variables involved in shooting aerial targets.

Do NOT feel bad about one Dove in the bag, I am National dove missing Champ!!

Any old Dove can fly right into my 12ga barrel and I WILL MISS them, Can knock Huge clouds of feathers off and they fly, FLY AWAY!!! Grumble Grumble, fricken Birds.

Now it is a totally different story on ALL other game birds, Quail, Swing through and hardly ever miss, Pheasant= Never miss, Band Tail Pigeon, no problem, rare misses, Geese LONG shots? Down they come, Ducks, easy dinners.

Best of luck on your future hunts for the elusive Dove, Damn Birds.

My son and I went Dove hunting on Labor Day Monday. We sat in a recently cut corn field and enjoyed God's world. The doves laughed at us from seemingly SR-71 height and velocity!

Wouldn't miss it for the world!

As a kid, I used to go to my uncle's farm and sit under a lone oak tree in this one pasture. The doves would come in and I would shoot the crap out of them, often getting two for ones. My Dad and uncle were impressed that I bagged so many. Then one day my Dad sat on my uncles porch and watched me shoot doves. That's when my Dad told it wasn't sporting to shoot them off that power line that ran near the tree.. Never did hunt doves much after that.
