Question FAL will not cycle, need help

I got a FN fal that will not cycle complete.

It fires, and the bolt get unlocked. the empty case is out the chamber and hangs in the bolthead+extractor. So the bolt is like 1/8" back.

If i handcycle it from there, the empty case comes out and flies to the right.

Handcycling goes ok.

The gasplug is in A
The gassetting is completely closed.
It looks to me that it needs a bit more power.

I tried FN ammo, MEN ammo and some arab surplus, all the same.

So, WTF?
Tips and trick?

I'm sure I'm wrong for giving the God of FAL rifles advise you have real ones lol. Maybe polish the chamber? I do that to every new semi auto barreled gun. I use a wore out 9mm brush for 762 a section of US cleaning rod a patch JB compound, Kroil and a battery powered drill on low setting. It doesn't take much.

The biggest question is what does the brass look like?

Not an expert but how does the gas piston look? Could it be bent and hanging up or allowing the gas to blow by somehow.

The first couple things I'd check is the Gas Tube Retaining pin and the barrel's Gas Port being blocked.
I assume the Gas Piston and Carrier Rat Tail are straight?

And, what ce said.

Check gas settings. Check gas port, piston, and piston retaining pin thingie in the gas block.

I've seen this happen when the pin went awol and a good (enough) seal wasn't being made between gas block adn tube.

I have NEVER had to polish the chamber of any new rifle I have bought. Unless it is a cheap barrel- I expect and demand that the rifle works from the very first round. In addition- I NEVER had to "break-in" a rifle or barrel. Maybe it's the quality they put out now- I bought most during the 1980s. No sights out of alignment or issues with functioning- just good solid dependable rifles. If it was designed to take an M16 mag- it works with all. The only exception is below.

The ONLY issue I ever had was with a CAI Cetme (no surprise there), but it had to do with feeding out of the magazine and not a barrel issue.

All parts look straigt.
The cocking cycle feels ok to me.
Gastube fits like a g

So, dry, it all looks good.
Will have a try on sunday, all oiled up and some spareparts with me.
The FAL looks brand new.

Far from an expert, but does the gas piston move freely?

My L1a1's gas tube pin was binding the tube which was screwed as close to the gas block as possible. Based upon some suggestions here on the Files, I backed off a turn from the gas block and the piston moved freely.

This might be keeping the gas piston from cycling as you describe.

how big is the gas hole? have you tried different size drill bits to see what's the largest size that fits?

Gas Problems

Check to make sure you have the right gas PLUG first. Then check the gas tube right behind the gas block to make sure the roll pin is their. If the roll pin is there,Push it out and check the alignment of the gas tube. Check to make sure the Gas regulator isn't or split cracked.

went to the range and fired the well lubed FAL, still same shit.
So, grabbed a fresh piston+spring and hey, rock and roll...

Brass flies out and the gun works fine.
I can't see anything wrong on the original piston. Strange.
I can't ask the previous owner since he is death.

Anyway, it works, that's all i needed.

Thanks for the input guys

Paco, if it makes you feel any better, I had a similar problem and spend time and money on the gas system... just to find out later that lube on the recoil system was hydrolocking it.

Measure the diameter of the gas piston (0.430" or 0.429") is min. could be worn or gas tube oversized...
