Rescued Wasr

This was a poorly treated and neglected ban era WASR with the worse refinishing job I have ever seen, it was unevenly applied and had bubbles in the stain. The after market dust cover would not even fit the rifle.

-Removed all the Handguards and Funiture. Replaced the wood with brand new polish set by WBP I think, than added a Bakelite Surplus pistols grip. New polish dust cover.

-Sawed off the barrel nut weld and added a tabuk Flash hider

-Added a belemo Posp scope with custom made RLO leather cheek riser

Rifle now easily rings steel at 200 yards off handed and looks half decent compared to its former self.

Here's a digital picture of a 35mm picture I took of a WASR which I "rescued" if you will, back in the early 2000's. At a Charlotte, NC gun show, a vendor had a whole pile of AK's that had been through a warehouse fire. All the stocks were burnt off, but otherwise they were complete. I paid about $50 for the rifle, $1 for the upper handguard, $1 for the lower handguard. The tension was gone from the springs. I bought used springs at the show for $10 and a 30 round German magazine for $5. I could not source a buttstock so I made my own from a culled a 2x4. Stripped, cleaned, installed new/used parts and painted rattle can black. Rifle shot like a champ, 1000 plus rounds and no malfunctions, and a whole lotta fun. Those were the dayz. Total investment about $67.00 give or take. I think the grip was also like $1 at that show.

That was an experiment. The riser (wood block) was drilled with a drill bit all the way through, as was the stock. Using a carriage bolt/riser/nut with thread locker, and finally a nut/washer on the bottom of the stock, I could get about 1/2 inch of rise. The bolt hole was counter sunk if you will to accept and hide the head of the carriage bolt, locked nut, and free moving nut on the bottom of the stock. I never mounted a scope on this rifle. The goal at that time was to own an AK for around $100.This little beater satisfied that objective. I am sure had I used the cheek riser it would have eventually failed, as it was not robust, but, it still was fun to tinker at the time.

You did a fantastic job Brother JonathanW. Would you please expound on your installment of the flash hider? Do you have to thread or "re-thread" the barrel or is it pinned? I need to put some kind of flash hiders on a couple of AK variants and that one looks great.

TIA,
Jarhead

Great job on the rifle.
I have had probably 8 WASR 10/63s and never had a bad one.
Never had a new production WASR 10 but I am sure its a fine rifle.

Thank you! And it was already threaded from the factory, the nut was welded in place. 5 mins with a saw got it loose and removed. It eliminates the flash very well

I was but was glad for Southern's explanation too since I did something similar for an L1A1 once.
