School me on body armor

Looking to put a plate carrier together. So far have the LBT carrier and some soft level 3a plates. I am looking for some hard plates.
I was originally thinking level 3, but with everyone now shooting M855, I am leaning to level 4.
I was looking at the RMA lightweight level 4 plates (4.4 lbs) or multi hit level 4 plates at 6.9 lbs.
Not looking at steel due to spall.
What do you suggest?

Nonetheless you disgust me, and I take comfort in the knowledge that your obituary will be nowhere near as humorous as mine.

The next time I hear "THE RANGE IS NOW HOT", it just wont be the same.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I ran my vest through a full day carbine class (10 hours) with 3a soft armor (2lbs) 6 ar mags and 2 pistol mags. No issues with weight so far, so I can handle more weight. I am 54 in decent shape, so no where near what could do in my 20s and 30s in the infantry.

I like the idea of 3a and a hard plate combo over stand alone plate as you can ditch some or all hard plates as needed.

With soft armor under the steel plates spalling should not be an issue. Weight would be though. Level 4 steel plates weigh 11-12 pounds per plate, though a level 3+ plate weighs about 7 pounds and would stop most common rifle rounds.

How about a book? Oh wait, never mind, someone already tried that.
