To Noobs to these builds (like me)

I've just posted a comparison of the barrel hand-timing between new Coonan and Imbel receivers (for my SARCO Chilean kits) in the DIY/Gunsmithing section.

Bought a kit a day before Spider, received it Christmas Eve as well.
Any tips on the handguards? Looking to fix the split and maybe clean them a little along with the stock, but I like the beat to shit look.

Serials:
Bolt 12199
Carrier 28387
Barrel 28023
Lower Scrubbed

Any way to recover the serial without damage?

The flash hider that came on mine has what looks like a 1959 stamp.

All these pics of kits with wood HGs is making me jealous! I hope my next kit shows up with a set

Email from Sarco at 4:03 PM says only 10 kits left. Somebody here should snag them up!

from what i understand here, member Yellowhand does a bang up job on them, ive seen him post stuf and they are pretty impressive!...im like you i dont mind them having character. I do my own. If it was summer,i leave them out in the sun to sweat all the grease out(being winter might wait till the wife is gone and use the oven!), then clean with mineral spirits..then some light sanding and tung oil when ya got them like you want them...others probably have a better way but this works well for me.

By the time I made it to their website they were only showing 2 units in stock so I decided to go for it. It seems they still have one last parts kit remaining. I'm really hoping they aren't bottom of the barrel parts cobbled together from leftovers.

Also, are there any specific recommendations for where to get a throat erosion gauge?

Also, what are the gauges called for checking throat/chamber erosion? I had never seen a gauge like that with AKM barrels but it seems pretty common with M14s and these FALs. I'm looking to pick up one up if there are specific recommendations.
Dont waste your money. I have an M14 gauge I use, I got it before I really knew any better and I was playing with M1As. Its made to tell throat erosion using the receiver as a guide so the marks dont work as intended on the FAL. I stick it in a known new barrel, mark it, and then check the unknown. Its not an exact science though. That "ugly" rifle I just built seemed to be shot out when I checked it. When I brought it to the range it was getting 3.5 MOA using just a front rest and Malaysian surplus at 100 yds. If I had a rifle vise I'm sure it could do better.

I dont think a gauge is worth buying. If you do want one anyways, I believe I got it from Fulton Armory.

Anyone looking to sell their Chilean (Or Cuban) build? I just finished a build and don't want to do another right now.

Question

I bought a Chilean kit from Dan’s about 10 years ago. Does anyone remember those? I believe the Dan’s kits were Imbels and not Belgians. They were in “carried a lot and fired very little” condition.

Can anyone give me any additional info on the Dan’s Chilean kits from years ago?

I was going to sell my Cuban clone project which I piecemealed over time but with these Chilean kits selling at $500, I have over twice that in my kit including parkerizing and machine work from Dr. Shock machining off the lug on the G1 barrel and stock refinishing by Yellowhand.

I guess I'll put it back in storage to sell at a better time unless the Democrats get their way and ban parts kits sales like they are already attempting to do with their bogus 3D Gun bill.

Lot of us get the kits and a nice receiver and send it to a builder like gunplumber....I can do almost all except time the barrel. But like last time, my conan was slightly out of spec and mark knew it and perfected it....I wouldn't know the difference...so ya, better to pay a pro sometimes

Those were nice kits. Made by Imbel. Bores were usually really nice, paint worn off on the barrels from carrying them around. At the time they were sold by Dan's as Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3. Grade 3 had the most finish wear but still had great bores.

I never said I did my own builds.

Well if I had parkerizing tanks or a lathe to turn off the lug on the G1 barrel then maybe I would have done the work myself but I don’t.

The Cuban kit (with original Cuban lower) is sitting in a box in storage. I usually send my kits to Gunplumber (Mark at ARS) since he has been my go to gunsmith since the mid 1990’s.

He did an awesome job repairing an HK630 with muzzle damage and slight surface rust that I just prefer to use him to build my rifles whether it’s an FAL, Galil or M14.

I am not into the battle field pickup look on anything even AKs.

I really, REALLY wish I had the extra scratch to buy one of these. I spent time in Chile/Argentina and it was one of the best times of my life. Would've loved to have one of these to commemorate it. Especially after seeing the Sandinista trench art that was on some (spent time in Nicaragua, too)

Congratulaciones, hermanos!

On Dan's kits, some were Imbel replacements and I think some were Argentina. Does anyone know for sure?

I received my third kit today, and it came with wood handguards. They have metal tabs. The right side is split and has some carved letters. They do not match in size, and when the screw joins them one is 3/16" further than the other.

My stock was carried by both Daniel and Camilo.

The bolt and carrier are nice and low numbered. Not nearly as rusty inside as my second kit.

Bolt: 466
Carrier: 618
Lower: 5543
Barrel: 6269

I will try my hand at repairing the split in the HG. My thought is clean with Dawn and hot water, steam, then wood glue slid in with a losing scratch ticket.

Cool, someone else is in my boat! I'm expecting a mint Cuban kit or something absurdly wonderful. Surely Sarco won't disappoint and DSA will have a big sale and list Type I receivers for $39.95.

That right side is weird, never seen a tab like that.

About the crack repair, that's the weakest repair you can make.
After degreasing and cleaning I cut a groove into the crack on the inside of the piece with a dremel the entire length of the crack, just deep enough to get into the crack around 3/32 to 1/16". Then using Devcon 2 ton two part epoxy I will flex the wood a little to open the crack and fill the entire groove with the epoxy. If the area is very, very thin and delicate I'll also lay in a small strip of fiberglass matting cut to over lap the groove just a little. Press this into the epoxy, let it set up.
If the crack won't stay closed I'll use wax paper and string or rubber bands to hold the pieces together until the epoxy kicks.
Once set up gently sand away any epoxy that may have seeped through to the outside then finish with favorite stain/oil/dye/whatever.
I do this on thin wood pieces, thicker pieces like stocks and grips get different treatment.

I ordered mine 12/28 and my UPS account is showing it is in transit and scheduled for delivery Tuesday 1/8 however I haven't received an email from Sarco confirming shipping. Hopefully I have a surprise to come home to after a 13 hour work day on Tuesday!

The other kits I've been seeing guys getting are pretty nice, usually I have good luck with kits so we will see...

Flashhider threads, RH or LH?

Hi Folks,
The browning-type long flashhiders on these Chilean kit barrels... right or left handed?
Thanks!

Received my kit today.

Was missing gas tube, gas plug and regulator.

Bore is fairly bright with faint pitting - flashhider in decent condition - barrel has scratches like it was turned in a vise but will be under handguards so not too concerned.

Lower is complete and metal is decent. Stocks and wooden handgaurds are beat up but no cracks noticable. Handguards screw is replaced with a phillips head and a nut.

Bolt and carrier are mismatched - carrier looks very rough finish wise.

Will be happy with it if Sarco replaces missing parts or provides a credit for missing parts.

On positive side traded a AR-15 racegun build I put together in 2001 for a Argy receivered L1A1 build with 9 mags. Probably had $800 in it back then but would have been hard to sell it for that much nowadays.

Received my kit, besides missing the gas tube pin and charging handle pin it is also missing the gas plug and the gas regulator sleeve. Notably the flash hider is cracked and the bore is pitted although bright. I'll post pictures when I get home but the serial numbers are:

Receiver: 21860
Barrel: 28781
Carrier: 23010
Bolt: 7057

Sounds similar to my kit - I think I'm probably also missing the gas tube pin and cocking handle pin. Not too concerned about them...

Well here is what I received. If it is not pictured then I don't have it, so if I'm missing any small parts please let me know. I know I'm missing the gas plug, gas regulator sleeve, gas tube pin, and the pin that holds the T-nut into the charging handle. I noticed that one of the longer pins is bent but I'm not sure what it is used for. I tried to get a picture of the bore but it was difficult. I'm not sure if I would describe the bore being "very good" condition if I were selling it since the pitting goes the entire length of the bore.

And a quick mock-up just for fun...

Those are ejector block pins.

Those are ejector block pins. Bore looks VG to me. Nice and shiny and pitting doesn't look to bad. Better than most of the South African bores I've seen.

Cuban Lowers have the triangle in front of the serial.

On the bright side you did get a cuban lower and the rarer wood handguards. Looks like Sarco was down to the last bunch of these with missing parts near the end

I e-mailed them yesterday (1/9) regarding my missing/damaged parts.

I feel like this last batch of them were the incomplete kits they kept for missing/damaged parts from the main sale and the kits that were returned.

My 3 looked alright until I inspected the bores. One was corroded the full length and the other 2 had deep rings of pitting in various places down the bore. Sent back for refund.

Got a 4th kit off EX1 in the marketplace. Had mild pitting down the length of the bore, like the pic of ClevelandReefer's bore. Lower, stock, chocolate handguards, bolt/carrier all in nice shape. Definitely a keeper! Now if DSA will just get some receivers back in stock.

msnyder, There was a DSA type 2 with carry handle cuts the other day in the marketplace but, their asking price was $75 over what DSA gets(I'm a FFL) gets from me and more for shipping. When I inquired how much shipping to me, someone else jumped on it so, no loss to me.
