Reading that
Some stores are not carrying 357 and 38 ammo anymore because it doesn't sell well. Might want to check what your store is doing. Looking at grafs for jacketed bullets it seems there is a shortage of some Speer bullets.

I'm incredulous, but at the same time realize revolvers are not the bread and butter of gunmakers anymore.
Bullseye is not so popular either and long barrels are out of vouge. Isn't a .38/.357 ubiquitous in everyone's firearm accoomalation? I would list them by handgun popularity as: .22LR 9mm .45 Auto .38/.357 .44 Mag .45 Colt ...and on down the line. Maybe nobody shoots them anymore, so no need of ammo?

Always sorta wanted a Dirty Harry version. Python was the holy grail in my youth. Buy no way I’d pay the price they cost now. About the only thing on my bucket list is a nice high power. The sig 320 I have is the only one in my stash that will eventually find a new home. I think I’d rather have a CZ than it

It's really funny watching the young guys at the gun club trying to shoot revolvers. Guy was shooting at the 6 inch steel from the bench rest with an L frame Smith and could only hit one out of six. The look on his face when I used the K38 to knock down 6 out of six double action while standing up was priceless.

I went to my local gun store to check my own bs. Bimart usually carries a good selection of reloading bullets in 38 cal. Today they had one box of 125 and one box of 158 grain bullets. So I went to Sportsmans Wear house and couldn't find hardly any Speer bullets, no gold dots to be found. Looks like online for me if I am going to buy bullets.

I reload so I won't let mine go but I will stock up on jacketed bullets. Bimart had a sale on hunting ammo and I bought 22 250 for $13.49 for federal. Can't buy brass and load them that cheap.

I cast wadcutters for .38 and semiwadcutters for .357 and I have more than a 5 gallon bucket full of brass for each, along with gobs of lead alloy and powder, so no worries here.
I have also been working on a big pile of inherited ammo in both cartridges, so good fun and practice until it's shot up. ![]()

There are fewer people playing with wheelguns in general. At the local matches, the number of participants using a revolver can be counted on the fingers of one hand while there are 70+ shooting autos.
I also suspect that most of the people who do shoot a revolver are feeding it reloaded ammo. I shoot one almost every week. Once in a while I find signs that another revolver shooter has visited the range.

My cost per round for .38/.357 with home cast bullets is ~8 cents, so $4 per box of 50 and it's accurate ammo on target!

I shoot hbwc in my 38s and use about 3 grains of 231 so I get about 2,300 loaded rounds to a pound of powder. Shoots very straight and mild recoil. I keep a lead stockpile but not many jacketed bullets on hand. My concern is that with fewer people shooting that caliber the companies won't make bullets for them to reload.
Casting may be in my future.

I also think of it as cost for non reloaders. 9mm can be had for under $10 a box online and local range sells it for about $13 a box. Try to find 357 for under $20 a box. The only difference between 38 and 357 is a bit of powder and a bit more brass in the case, yet the ammo companies charge a hefty premium, and this pushes shooters away. The same can be said for 357 sig versus 40, look how few people shoot 357 sig. At the end of the day people will shoot the gun that will cost the lowest... 9mm, 5.56 and 7.62x39.

The 150gr FMJ is gone. They still have 125gr JHPs and 158gr JSPs. People who shot that bullet reluctantly switched to a 140gr bullet from Montana Gold which is conical. It works but not as well.

Guns stores in my opinion buy in bulk to get a better deal but even in bulk the price of ammo is really high. What does the future bring is the real question?

Well there is quite a cottage industry of casting bullets to supply people who shoot cowboy guns. The larger companies also offer swaged bullets.
For real magnum loads, a gas check or a jacketed bullet is needed and I expect they will remain available, although cost will increase. There are a host of unusual rifle calibers that stores keep one or two boxes for sale. I hope it won't be that bad. Since the police pretty much quit using 357s I'd imagine that it doesn't rate too highly when scheduling machine time to make ammunition. There are foreign suppliers of loaded ammo too, but those brands are not common in a brick & mortar market. Look at who still makes the 357 Mag ammunition today: Fiocchi Sellier & Bellot PMC Privi Magtech Speer Remington Federal Hornady Winchester Black Hills Geco CCI I don't think I had half of those choices when I started shooting the caliber. Many of them offer several flavors. If you want to prevent the cartridge from becoming obsolescent, encourage more people to shoot wheelguns.

One point I want to make and it's just a bad dream but Kali has a lic and background check to buy ammo. They say what happens in Kali is what the nation will do so how will a law like that affect the LGS and what they have on the shelves? I hate to be caught by suprise and have been in the past so I look ahead now.

decent revolvers cost 4-5 times as much as mass produced striker fired auto crap like glocks and springfield XD.

There are some good deals on bulk 38 & 357 Remington ammo online.
I stocked up on the Golden Sabre 125gr 357 - good medium velocity load that doesn't eat up the forcing cone. http://ammunitionstore.com/categorie...57-magnum.html |

If Smith & Wesson ever decides to offer a light weight J-frame in 9mm, then take my money! I'll buy one of those in a heartbeat. 9mm would offer plenty of power in that little gun. Way more than .38 special loads, and yet more manageable than 125 .357 loads. (no "flash bang" effect when fired in confined spaces).
First gun was a model 60 Smith. Then a model 19. And then a custom shop 4" Python. Did a lot of wheel weights, gas checks, Bullseye, and Unique back then. In more recent times my carry was a 642, but I let that one get away too. Only revolver left is a four inch Rhino. Damn, that thing is ugly, but it shots like a demon. After dabbling in building 1911s for years, the wheel guns ended up in the back of the safe and I did cave in to the dark side. Now with Colt coming back into the revolver market, I begin to look back at those early times with much fondness and wonder if they might ever re-introduce the Python once again. |

I have a S&W 686-6 that I bought new 21/2 years ago. It is my 1st revolver and I like it so much I shoot it once or twice a week. I have had a .357 Coonan and still have my old Desert Eagle and wanted to go back to where it started from and got my Smith. I save all my brass and just got a couple of cases of .357 and .38 Special and am currently shopping for really good dies and bullets for my Dillon. I've been studying reload data and when the weather turns, I'll fire up the Dillon and crank out a bunch. Been looking at the RIA auction for another wheel gun too !

Some time ago I was talking to the guy that makes the moon clips for Smith, he is Ranch Products. Can't remember his name but he sold me on stocking his moon clips when I was doing the gun shows. I don't do the shows anymore but may have what you need. Are they five shot or six shot?

Some folks don't like the use of moon clips. Used them with the S&W 610 and they were every bit as handy as speed loaders. The pistol could be loaded and shot without the clips, but then extraction becomes problematic. Nobody likes snagging a nail plucking out hot cases.

I love revolvers. No serious practical shooter (or prepper) worth the salt the throws on his food would be missing a revolver in his armory. To shooters, a 4" .357 magnum is about as standard to shoot as noses on people's faces.
Brother Bawana Jim, thanks for the heads up on the future of the 38 and 357 components. I'll start looking for more 125 and 158 semi-jacketed hollow points to lay aside. Jarhead Last edited by Jarhead504; October 08, 2018 at 17:22. |

These shots were taken after a several years long cure for Smithitis had been administered.
The cure continued on for a short while longer, until 3 remained... I'm cured! ![]() I've posted these before but they are nice to look at. SWs_L_small.jpg SWs_R_small.jpg
