Look out! It's Charging!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/marylan...og-road-video/

"SYKESVILLE, Md. -- A video posted to social media shows a Maryland deputy shoot a groundhog as it was trying to cross a road. CBS Baltimore reports the Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputy was on Old Liberty Rd., near White Rock Rd., when he saw traffic backed up.

A groundhog was walking into the roadway, "causing vehicles to stop and creating a hazard," the sheriff's office said.

The deputy got out of his vehicle to get the groundhog away from the roadway, but the deputy reported that the groundhog was not acting normally.

"Believing the groundhog to be either sick or injured," the deputy shot the groundhog, and "put the animal down for the public's safety," the sheriff's office said."

Yeah,

It was big news here for a day. My nieghbor is a deputy county sheriff and she said the guy must be a wimp. After we talked she went inside and screamed at her husband that outwieghs her by an easy 100lbs. I swear they are most likely to have a domestic.

they are not nice animals when threatened. .i had a hound named smokey that got his ass kicked by a groundhog. i would not try to pick up a live one, even with welding gauntlets.

The next time I hear "THE RANGE IS NOW HOT", it just wont be the same.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I have picked up groundhogs but only after I clobbered them with a 55 grain JSP out of my Ruger Number One in .220 Swift. The soybean farmer whose fields I was shooting on insisted that I stuff them back into their dens. That way they fertilized the soil according to him.

And so it goes.

I'm surprised there was anything left after getting hit with a 220 Swift.

A marmot crossing a road is not normal behavior. Those nasty fat bastards stay close to the den....kinda like......well... never mind.

Squirrels, raccoons, opossums, mule deer and mama ducks into oncoming traffic, yes.

They cross the roads all the time around these parts. And they get clipped by cars regularly.
Traffic does not come to a halt for woodchucks.

I was once owned by a husky-shepherd mix that was hell on woochucks. He would circle around one a couple times then chomp, chomp on the spine, a quick shake in his jaws, all done. Seen him do it more than twice.

Too bad you didn't take footage from the back seat, that'd be pure Youtube gold these days.

all depends on the load you have worked up

have a 40 gr load running the edge @ 4000fps that makes some big groundhogs (40 plus pounds) into pink mist & hair or the equivalent of a garbage bag of water , depends where & how you hit them & how far away

had one guy living on a farm that was not being worked by him, he asked me to drop all groundhogs at the corner of his shed, he cleaned them, quartered them, threw'em on a old gas grill & fed them to the herd of cats, so I switched back to my standby load of a speer 52 gr hp flat base & IMR 3031 a load from my grandfathers list he copied out of a 1965(?) guns & ammo article on the 220 swift

The real question here is "why was the groundhog crossing the road"

We had a German Shepherd Husky mix that was very protective of my youngest Son. One day a groundhog got between them somehow out in the back garden. That dog killed that hog like it was nothing. I bet the hog weighed in at 10 pounds or a little more. What I found odd was the GH's had these tunnels that spread out in several directions for 50-60 yards. You could drive your tractor over them and never know they were there. Took me years to clean them all out.
