SAS-12 . . . worth a shot?

I know, bad pun. How about one of these SAS-12 12GA semi-auto mag-fed shottys for $140 from Centerfire Systems? Worth trying out?

As long as it cycles, for $140 it'll probably be fun.

I'd be worried that if it ever breaks you would not find replacement parts though.

Very . . . . tempting . . . . . probably because I am still in a spending Christmas mood and I have yet to do the latest bills . . .

Plus . . . . I wonder if I could 3D print an even larger magazine, or start collecting a few mags from other shotguns just to see what fits . . . another project I don't need . . .but why not?

This got me excited because I thought you were inquiring about a SPAS12, my mind added a letter.

After looking at the pictures of it, I donít know if I would buy it. Main reason is how easy is it going to be to find a spare/replacement magazine because without it you just have a single shot gun or a club if itís got some magazine disconnect that wouldnít let the gun fire without the mag in.

Also would be skeptical about it reliability with various types of ammo, auto loading shotguns have been known to be picky about what ammo will make the, work good.

But at the price, the risk maybe worth a roll of the dice. Thatís up to you. For me Iíd pass on it.

So...say you could get 7 round capacity out of a 5 round magazine and you could get it to feed and eject with dependability...WOULDN'T THIS MAKE A GREAT ANTI-DRONE GUN?

From what I've read the machining and QC isn't the greatest on the sas12 and to get them to function out of the box you need the ooomf of the high brass shells.
I saw a video where it showed the burrs remaining in the gas ports. So I think you would definitely have to give the ports, action and the mags some TLC.
140 bucks for a 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun? Maybe fun to play with.
From the AKfiles post; "I tried my cut three round follower( made it a 4 round mag ) in a 5 round mag and it fit 7 rounds. It fit on a closed bolt and cycled all 7 round a few times. Cut a little over 3/8" off the follower."
Still I wonder about component strength.

Good God no, I had one back 4-5 years ago. such a piece of junk. Reciever felt like pot metal, bolt felt like it weighed all of 4 ounces. Felt soooo cheap, like it was a converted toy. I shot maybe 50 rounds through it, had trouble getting it to shoot more than 1 in a row.

Sold that POS for a loss to a friend with full understanding of its flaws who was game to see if he could fix it. He couldnt get it to run either.

Not even for $40 would I buy one

I love cheap semi-auto shotguns, but I'll stick to old Remingtons, which I have a few of. If you keep an eye out, chances are you can snag a Model 11, 1148, or Sportsman 58 locally for $200 or less.

Last year, maybe October or so, I bought two on a whim. One for experimenting and one for spare parts. I ordered a few extra 5 rd magazines, shortened followers and increased capacity of the magazines.

I tore it down entirely, took pics, shortened the barrel, opened the gas ports a bit and reassembled. Interestingly, its nearly an identical clone of a Beretta 1200 FP with a box magazine feed instead of a tube feed.
The magazine springs are identical in both the 3 and 5 rd magazine, its just the follower tab on the 5 rd mag that needs to be chopped to increase it to 6 rds. You can reduce the follower a bit more for another round. See pics.

Pics of teardown....surprisingly, it is all metal, only the stocks are plastic.

Its still a little finnicky on cycling, Im gonna open up the ports a bit more and see what happens. The barrel just may be too short now. Im also looking for a beater Beretta 1200FP to see how exact a copy this thing is. If I can put a Beretta barrel on this receiver, I might have more options.
