My re-born Turk.......
Refurbished the old Turk Mauser. Glass beaded the metal and re-blued it. Stained the stock with Chestnut Ridge Walnut stain with a hint of red. The "hint" was a little stronger then usual with this stock, but it looks good. I then gave her a hand rubbed Tung Oil finish.
I wish I had a better overall photo, as this really doesn't do it justice. I realize it isn't "restored", but a $39 rifle with another $35 in it for blueing, ain't bad. The stock has some nice fiddle-back in it, but you can't really see it.

Thanks guys, but I was going to delete this thread because the pics don't do it justice. I'm afraid I'm going to have to break it to the old woman that I need a new digital camera. Or learn to use this one better.
This will show some of the fiddle-back.

She's beautiful man...how did you get all of that junk off of the stock? I'd like to do something like that to mine, but there seems like there's bout 6 inches of gunk on it. I tried a chemical stripper but it didn't really work, any suggestions, what did you do to strip yours down? That is , if you did, how did you do it?

I may 0000 steel wool it to cut down on the gloss a bit, as the metal is all glass beaded and has a matte finish.

idsubgun,
Beautiful job, guy...... good work. I only own one Turk 38 at present. Has a gorgeous unfinished walnut stock on it with lots of figure. Every time I see it I have dreams of what it would look like finished out like yours.... the only thing that holds me back is.... well, all those metal parts. The whole rifle was re-blued in a re-build. Huge rust pits show around the receiver under the new blueing. The barrel.... unfortunately, is pure-D crap. Shotgun bore. Minute of barn door accuracy. I either need a new rifle to go with the wood, or find a good barrel to twist onto the action and at least make it shootable before I do anything with it. Best to all, swampy |

You did a nice job refinnishing that rifle. Idsubgun right about acetone taking the oil out of the stock. I been doing the same thing and acetone work great for those nasty oil soak stocks

That's a fine lookin' turk, idsubgun. I also enjoy bringing old war horse rifles back to life. I'm scouting around for a winter project now.
One small suggestion. Someday when you're bored, you oughtta dust the rear sight off in a surface grinder. That'd look sharp,.. a shiny, ground surface with the bluing still on the lines and numbers. What kind of blue did you use? Black oxide?

opie,
I completely immersed the stock in acetone. Took about 3½ gallons to cover it, and only lost about ¾ gal to evaporation. I covered it with black visqueen to slow evaporation. You need to find something long enough to get a complete Turk stock into. I have a couple of Doubleought's tanks and one is 48" long. He's making a lid for me as we speak. As said before, it takes several hours to get the oil out. I did it in batches of 3-5 hours, not knowing what effect the acetone would have on the wood. I would then let it set for a day, or overnight, to see if anymore oil leeched out. Then re-dipped it until it could sit for a day without any sign of any major oil seepage. BTW, I see you're in Fruitland and going to school. Are you going to Boise State? I'm in Boise, in case you didn't know.

I'm pretty sure that I have something that'll work for that out at my parents.
Nope, I'm on my last quarter with Tragic Valley Community College in Ontario, well I have just the winter quarter to go. Advisor kinda screwed up and left one required class off my schedul last winter that is only offered in the winter, so I'm holding off on school to pput some money away, and looking for a job that'll put some money in the pocket and keep the bills paid up. I'm fortunate I suppose, my bills don't add up to all that much so a full-time job at like a gas station will both pay bill and put some money in the pocket. BTW, do you happen to know a guy by the name of Andy Turner? |

The $39 Turk that I bought was a turd. Stock cracked and rust rot in the front end. The beauty is that I'm going to use it for one of those stupid liberal gun buy back programs where they'll give you $100 for each working gun you turn in - no questions asked.

Two reasons......... One, if you turn in a gun, any gun, you're helping those bastards. This is what they want. Two, there are new stocks out there for these rifles, at a cheap price. Or, many have sporterized their Turks and there should be a shit load of Turk "take off" stocks floating around. Ask around, I bet you find one for next to nothing.

I work with Andy in the Guard, I think that he mentioned you were on this forum. Did you send him some advice on buying a CETME a while back? He said he went through aomewhere around 15 before he picked out the one he has, and I know that he bought an AK from someone in Boise fairly recently;Don't suppose that was you was it? That AK was pretty, but I gave hime a hard time about buying it anyway. I told him that he was gonna go broke shooting it because they are alot of fun. Hope that someday I'll beat him to buying a new toy....going to try for a 30 carbine, because he dosen't have one of those yet.
