MRE #14 - VEGETARIAN

I’ve read some comments about how horrid the “vegetarian” MRE is supposed to be.

This one has been sitting around in the cupboard since last summer for my “vegetarian” wife to eat. She hasn’t touched it except to give me the hairy eyebrow while commenting on not having enough shelf space in the kitchen.


So, today I decided to oblige her and tackle it my own self.

So, what exactly IS a manicotti?

This stuff tastes pretty darn good.

Texture of the filling is a bit dense if you want to get picky. I think a “real” manicotti is supposed to have a somewhat lighter filling.

We’ve had the pound cake before.

Tastes kind of like a cross between “real” pound cake and the yellow part of a Twinkie.

Let’s jazz it up with that raspberry applesauce.

Looks kinda like a maxi-pad on a “high-flow day.”

(you didn’t REALLY think I was gonna go through this without making at least ONE nauseating comment)

Hey, seriously….. this stuff is DELICIOUS.
I mean it. Really it is.
I licked it clean after I finished the chewy part.

Errr….now the “Ranger Bar.”

Kinda looks like dried scat.

Kinda had the texture of it too.

Its got dried COCONUT all through it. I don’t like coconut.

Flavor was actually OK. Kinda like Pop-Tart pastry with fargin’ dried coconut laced all through it.

Overall, I’d rate the Vegetarian Meal as pretty darn good. Much better complementary selections of foods than some of the other meals for sure.

The raspberry applesauce on the pound cake was really da bomb.

i have some MRE's from Y2K and they are in stored/boxed perfect shape.

that means at least 7+ years old.

worth keeping? or better off tossing it out?

My 200lb Brazilian Mastiff enjoyed the outdated MRE's. If storage isn't an issue keep them - you never know...

At 7 years, I think I'd just eat them to clear out the stock. Certainly no need to throw them away if the first one you taste seems OK.

BTW, I happen to notice that two of the three MRE's in your pic are non-meat MRE's. If you are into non-meat MRE's, BOTAC.com has four non-meat meals. Ends up costing about $83/case if you order new commercial MRE's. Kind of expensive, but I only have one vegetarian to contend with in my A.O.

I've got those too, I give them to the dogs when needed. But I am still willing to eat them. I had the chocolate oatmeal cookie the other day, it was still good but not quite as good as when new. The only thing i would avoid is the applesauce. Its probably still good, but it turns a funky color the older it gets.

Mine were made in the first 1/3 of 1999, and have been stored around 70F.

The vegetarian meals are always the last ones left in the box at my house. You have to have a can of Spam as a side dish.

1020 calories + the peanut butter!!! You could sustain yourself for quite a while eating one of those a day.

I have eaten MREs that were well beyond their 5 year shelf life, or were stored improperly (too hot, mostly). They seem to go bad in stages, first the fruit based items go, like the spiced apples or applesauce, they turn brown, smell funny. Next, the oil seperates out of the cheese and penut butter. The main meals/crackers/wheat snack bread/etc... seems to last a long, long time. If the whole bag, or compents in the bag are swollen, do not eat. We were issued very old MRE's with the instructions not to eat the fruit or cheese, we did ok. As always, your results may varry.
