For those that missed out on the South African web gear from SG, tis a shame, the stuff is nice, and brand new. Those guy's sure liked to carry mag's, There is a mag pouch where ever they could put one, I'll bet it's damn heavy when full
You could probably lose some stuff in the pouches also.Nice thing about it was it included a load bearing vest or suspenders if you will, I have some of the Canadian C1(?) mag pouches, you ever put a couple of those on yer belt?? Guess what happens to yer pants ![]() ![]() Ordered 2 sets, about 47 bucks to the door with shipping an MN sales tax, I didn't think it was just to bad a deal. ![]() Dave

I ordered a set as well. It only came with one regular mag pouch, but there are mag pouches on the outside of everything else.
How do you put this together, anyway? I've never seen so many straps, d-rings, and clips on anything. It's got to be simple, I'm sure. |

I got three sets at 15 bucks a pop. As stated above, it is brand new. The set is well made but heavy(>8lbs). Mine came with a photo of it being worn... complete with the shoulder bag. I think that shoulder bag would not have lasted too long in the field...quite bulky for slinking.
I've bitched about SG before, but think I did pretty well this time(SA web, gambrels on sale for 4.97 ea, 10 PK of mil shackles for 12 bucks). The coupons help. |

There are 2 quick-release tabs - one across the chest and one on the left-hand shoulder-strap. These were specifically designed so that the left-hand could pull them both, leaving the right hand on the weapon:

1. Pulling the chest quick-release tab allows the two green-painted metal rectangles (one small, one larger) to separate:

A few memories here:
1. First problem was getting the whole rig set-up just right for you by adjusting the straps, etc. 2. Second problem was getting everything silenced, so we used to test by jumping up and down while fully-loaded and listening for rattles, squeaks, etc (extra toilet-paper was useful for this apart from the obvious). 3. The straps were pretty long so that the rig would fit the largest of men - this usually meant that there were generous lengths left over and we had to keep things neat by rolling-up the remaining lengths. For the life of me I can't remember exactly how this was done (20 years ago) but I'll try and remember. Hope this helps someone. |

Thanks, Andy.
It certainly helped me out. I'm going to have to get my buddy who recently emigrated to South Africa to find me a couple other items for this web gear, like water bottle holders. |

Those should be 3 pieces in total - green plastic waterbottle with screw-off cap, the holder itself (same green canvas as the rest of the webbing) and what we called the firebucket (aluminium kidney-shaped cup with folding handle).

One more thing I just remembered - the canvas softens over time with use, making it a heck of a lot more comfortable - so to soften them more quickly, we'd throw the lot into a tumble-drier with a pair of boots for a few hours

I got a set from member Quack a few years back and like it, but they were not sold with the backpack. Anybody know where I can pick a backpack up to fill out the set?

Andy When I received my 83 vest the straps were rolled and I did the same thing to my Pat 70 gear. As soon as I can figure out how to do it in pics I will post them. You basically make a loop and then rool the rest of the strap up and fit it into the loop.

I just recieve 2 sets in the mail today. These are well made and of sturdy material. I wonder what one of these sets would weight when wet? I tested the Gortex US parka in the shower, and I dont see why this cant be tested in the same manner.

If you look at the sportsman guide photo, they angled it just right , so the mag pouch of the buttpack looks like a second front mag pouch. Mine came with one individual mag pouch too.
*edit* in the ad it says mag pouch, I guess that means ONE mag pouch |

Man, am I glad I found this thread! I bought a hippo pouch from a Files member last year and love the setup but it didn't come with suspenders. Now, with Andy's great pics and instructional powers and nemethm's Omaha's link, I can finish out my rig and put my alice suspenders back on my web belt. Thanks guys...

Glad to help, fellers
I also got a single mag-pouch, but I seem to remember that that was all that SG offered in this deal, anyway - no problems. lhofeld - you're jiggling at something in my memory and I'm quite sure you're correct - I just have to get myself to go and try it now. |

My UPS driver showed up at 1930 hrs with my SG boxes. ground blind, small tree stand and 1 set of SA webbing (should have ordered 2). Crisp creases, musty smell... mmmmmmm surplus.
I want to thank everyone for the pics. Now I know how to set these up as well as my other set. I got one question. the shoulder bag has loops on the back. was it ever worn on the belt.? With my waist line, it fits well. COD

Wussies.
SA military basic-training - everyone in full kit and rifle, throw your buddy over your shoulder fireman-style (called skaapdra, or sheep-carry), race 100 yards, turn and race back where you swap between carrier and the carried. Unless you lost the race, in which case you just kept your position and ran again...and again...and again... never seen so many guys vomit in my life

Just ordered a set of suspenders and hippo pouches from Omaha's on monday (5/14), arrived Friday (5/18). There didn't appear to be any limits on availability when I placed my order.

Finally got my set put together. Biggest PITA was finding a canteen carrier. Tracked down 1. Would like 2 more.
With the full 16 magazines (no small pack or satchel), it wears well. The wide straps do a good job of dispersing the weight. Compared to other web gear I've spent time in, I like this rig.

You can partially see it just above the ejection-port of the FAL lying on it - it's exactly the same weight/color of canvas material with 2 closing-snaps. It had two belt-lops at the rear of the carrier with a single male snap
My canteens (mid-80's) were plastic only, green color and with an aluminum "firebucket" or kidney-shaped mug with folding handle. |

TNT Armory-
It sounds like you have a canteen from an earlier SADF webbing set, pattern 61. There were two types of strap carriers, the first had a sholder strap and did not need to be worn with the webbing, the second type attached directly to the belt (think WWII and post war West German). The web set was later modifed into pattern 61/64 and the P37 style of water bottle went away to be replaced by a pattern 44 style carrier. I have a picture of all three on my computer somewhere, I'll see if I can find it. Most of the older sets of webbing were later donated to Rhodesia along with some pattern 70 equipment. mrf2

Thanks, paris - it came to $36 shipped for the pair and only took 2 days to arrive, so I was happy.
I'm kicking myself for forgetting the firebuckets (waterbottle cup) - about $8.50 apiece, but those will have to wait for now. |

I don't remember the specifics any longer, but it was pretty much your belt-kit where you kept the essentials (in the event that you'd had to ditch the back-pack). Dixies (set of aluminum mess-tins) and at least 1 ratpack (24hr ration-pack) and survival kit went in there.

In answer to Jpanzer on what was carried - it depends.
In training you would carry your mess kit - as you would get rations from the kitchens. Once you went operational again it would depend - if you were going out of base for the day you would get what were called "dry rations" basically tinned food and "dog biscuits" - you'd leave your mess kit behind and eat out of your "fire buckets" - which went around your water bottles leaving your kidney pouches free. I used to carry a plastic container of baby wipes instead of toilet paper, cleaning kit and gun oil, 3 x 20 rnd mags (of the ten I carried) plastic container that sealed - ice cream cartons fit in nicely - spare pair of socks, a spoon, one days food - one rat pack. I had a ground sheet that I could use as a poncho/casevac stetcher on the back and then I had private bought stuff bag - waterproof in which a kept either a poncho liner or bush jacket - this clipped to the back of the pouches and was kept in place by the two straps that went back to hold the pouches up. I then had to find space for a 60mm mortar bomb, 200 rnds of link, two rat packs, and a extra two liters of water in standard pack. Once you stretched to 7 or 14 days out in the bush I went for Rhodesian chest rig, skeleton webbing - no kidney pouches - just a belt, suspenders and two water bottles, two mag pouches and the patrol bag and a privately purchased bergen by karrimor - 85 liters which I could load with everything. I served 1980 at I SAI in Bloemfontein for 10 months training then went to 61 Mech at Omathiya for a 14 month "tour" - did two internal and 2 external operations in that time called Protea and Daisy. Did another tour in 1985 and my final tour in 1987. The pattern 1970 was not well loved at the time - if it rained it was terrible, when the gear of 1983 came in it was a huge relief for everyone. |
