Come on guy's how do these things shoot?
My .223 SAR 4800 out shoots my Bushmaster AR, M4gery with iron sights. Sure, the SARs are a bit heavy for a .223 but my AR sits at home mostly unused/unloved since I have an FAL in .223.

I haven't shot the .308 SAR yet I still need a nut for the new pistol grip.

Just found a 7mm-1 nut for the pistol grip, checked the gas tube /piston+spring and I'm ready to go shoot the .308!!!!

Another SAR4800

Can anyone confirm whether on not there is a "US Parts Count" issue if the "BUNGHOLE" stock is removed?

ALBPM:
yes "please" keep us informed on how it shoots. I have a "vested" interest in this now...

That has been up for debate for quite a while. I would suggest you just put the US parts and not worry about it.

Thanks ALBPM for the information about the recoil springs. It may come in handy one day.My SAR4800 in .223 is very accurate and can place ten shots inside of an inch to an inch and a half and I am by no means a benchrest shooter and the range usually has a ten mile per hour crosswind. Thanks again!

OK, I'm ready to shoot the SAR but the City Range is closed Monday and Tuesday.
I'll never find my way back down to the Los Lunas spot... and I'm not a Zia member.

Is anyone in the Albuquerque area going shooting today????

I emailed Springfield for info on my SAR 4800s.
My .308 serial# 164xx was made 3/96. It does not have a threaded barrel and the Protector is pressed on.... So, somewhere between # 160xx and 164xx they stopped threading the barrel for the Thread Protectors on the .308s.

My .223 SAR 4800 serial# 11xx was made 11/85 and has the threaded barrel and Protector.

I tried to get them to let me have the Serial# vs manufacture date info for the SARs but they won't release that to the public.

You can email Springfield to get the info on your SARs though.

I picked up a SAR4800 last September that appeared to be like new. According to Springfield it was made in August of 1994 and was equiped with a "Thread Protector". After the 1994 AWG ban the SAR4800's did not have threaded barrels.

If the thumbhole stock is replaced with a pistol grip and coventional butt stock then the weapon falls under the 922(r) provisons. Meaning, you need to have the proper amount of U.S. made parts installed to be legal.

By the way, I changed the stock, added a flash hider, and other parts to be compliant and I now have one of the best looking and shooting battle rifles in my safe.

Another SAR4800

I bought this one over the weekend:

http://www.polygunbag.com/Guns.html

I saw that the description say's "Thread Protector" but at this point I "do not" know thw serial #?
Looks like a sweet rifle, and I specifically asked about it's "condition".
I was told it is "NIB, & UNFIRED".....

Funds are on there way as well as the FFL from Court in Fl.
As soon as I know the S# I will post here.

I have two Muzzle devises to choose from in the safe.
One is a "Z-Climb (wihich I like very much), the other was made by Tony (AKA M&M Gunsmithing). Another build is on the way so I don't know at this point which rifle will get what devise?
Guess I need a few more compliance parts?

You did not give them the complete serial number therefore you were given a wrong date by about 10 or so years.
In 1985 the Brazilian MD2/3 series that were imported as SAR4800s were not even in production yet.
The 5.56mm SAR4800 import dates and serials have been researched and discussed before on this board by long time owners, just about all the 5.56s except possibly some early import samples were post 922r.

PS
1500 or so of the 5.56s is the total number most commonly quoted as imported by SA. But an RKI (who no longer posts here) I knew a few years ago said the actual number was closer to 1000 and I believe that is true.

Ok, the only ammo I have is the boxed Argentine from Ammoman.com

Albuquerque City Range

I initially sighted in at 25yds.. It was shooting high and to the right at first. After I moved it close enough on the main target I put some penny diameter orange and green dots down on the white paper so I could see my front sight better.

I got a nice 3 and 4 round group at last.

Here's the 100yd target. It shot high and to the right at first. After I got the sights adjusted I shot ~50 rounds fairly fast.

My initial 100yd groups are high and right you may be able to make out the circles and marks/numbers for the group around them.
The last 50 or so rounds are not marked.

I made one initial gas setting and no FTFs or FTEs. Very nice shooting rifle!!!!

So far it shoots pretty darn good.

Here is an Excerpt of the E-mail I received from S/A today. I have had correspondence with them before this as well. This one still does not reveal any Ser# range info. I do "NOT" have my Rifle in hand, so I still can't say what I have for sure?

Quote:
I would like to help you as much as I can. According to the serial number, that gun was produced on 7/31/96. As long as that flash suppressor is a functional flash suppressor, and not a “fake” one (a fake one will have slots that do not go all the way through the suppressor), it will be a threaded flash suppressor. There is a slight chance that it is not a threaded suppressor. I wish we had a definite date or serial number designating when the suppressors changed, but we do not. For that I apologize.
Nothing really definitive, as I had hoped for?

Thanks Huntr!!! It is a very nice rifle....my first .308

Hot DAMN!!!!! DYNOMIKE69 got his finally!!!

I hope it's as nice as mine.
I'm just now cleaning it up a bit and am amazed at how clean it is after ~200 rounds. No brass marks from ejected cartridges, no brass flakes in the breech. It just plain runs Great!!!

Yup, picked it up today. Is indeed NIB! Not a mark on it anywhere...
Weather sux so no range trip this weekend. Next fer sure.

M/D is as I suspected "FAKE", and pressed on.
Other than that I am very satisfied.
Gotta figure out how to remove stock, and what I need to install new Stock, & P/G?

Ya, but they have an impeccable safety record - 13 years without an accident.

They don't give the "Stoopidfeckers" a chance to hurt anyone.

Note the nice tables and shade awnings.....The City really fixed the place up nicely.
