CCW - Claim Jumper Restaurants

Mr. Robert Ott
President /CEO, Claim Jumper Restaurants
robert_ott@claimjumper.com

It is with great sadness that last night brought to a close my 30 year relationship with Claim Jumper Restaurants. I started eating at Claim Jumper when I was still small enough to stand on the scale. I brought my date to the Laguna Hills location for Junior Prom back in 1985, and I'd take my mother to the Mission Viejo location whenever I visited. Here in Arizona, I was thrilled when you opened the Phoenix and then the Avondale location. I live half-way between the two and frequent both.

I brought my party to the Phoenix location last night for a celebration and was greeted by a large "No Firearms" sign on the door. I absolutely support your right to prohibit law-abiding citizens from carrying a firearm on your premises. I am happy for your success, as in these difficult economic times, you must be doing very well indeed to spit in the faces of such a large section of your market. My friends and I, we vote with our wallets, and will patronize those establishments that respect our right to self-defense. We also network. I will be relating my experiences on several mailing lists and discussion forums. I figure a thousand people will know by lunch time, and 10,000 by dinner. Or maybe they already know and I'm the slow one.

In any case, once again, thank you for clearly stating what you think of me and my 30 years of loyal patronage. You will not have me or any of my extensive network of associates sully your establishment again. I'll miss the blueberry muffins the most.

T. Mark Graham
President
Arizona Response Systems.

I have not checked, but maybe you already did?

Well worded letter, they must have made their decision based on the input of some corp. lawyer. Truely sad when a chain does stuff like this.

Sure - spread it around. Like when Bank of America refused me credit card processing services because I was a gunsmith! A few appearances on radio talk shows and 10,000 people pulling their accounts and suddenly "we don't have such a policy".

Maybe I should go back and take a picture of it. Its the one across from Target and the AMC 30 by the 101 and I-17.

The sign complies with the requirements of ARS (Arizona Revised Statutes, not Arizona Response Systems) 4-229.

http://www.azliquor.gov/assets/docum...rm_sign_en.pdf

4-229. Licenses; handguns; posting of notice

A. A person with a permit issued pursuant to section 13-3112 or who meets the criteria specified in section 13-3102, subsection D, paragraph 1 or 2 may carry a concealed handgun on the premises of a licensee who is an on-sale retailer (of alcohol) unless the licensee posts a sign that clearly prohibits the possession of weapons on the licensed premises. The sign shall conform to the following requirements:

1. Be posted in a conspicuous location accessible to the general public and immediately adjacent to the liquor license posted on the licensed premises.

2. Contain a pictogram that shows a firearm within a red circle and a diagonal red line across the firearm.

3. Contain the words, "no firearms allowed pursuant to A.R.S. section 4-229".

That was well done, GP. It showed an admirable level of restraint, and got the message across clearly and concisely.

I did have to smile, however, when this peeked out from around the edges:

"... you must be doing very well indeed to spit in the faces of such a large section of your market."

That's my lad.

Good move GP!

I also followed up with a short polite email to Mr. Ott expressing my displeasure and commitment to not frequent his establishments!

Same. Told the guy that he was making a bad choice for his restaurant and for his customers. Told him we wouldn't be back.

Cut ALL tax rates personal and business to 11%, abolish all unconstitutional federal agencies.
It'll hurt but it would help us as a country.

limeyinaz, very few, really. I think that most counties that would be effectively shall-issue wouldn't have a dense enough population base to make one feasible, and the ones that do are effectively no-issue to the average citizen. In short, it's not a common enough situation for there to be a law to cover it or the specifics of signage. After the MacDonald case, that may have to change, though.

Judge for yourself

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=263735

and this is what some Arizona gun owners do:

http://www.asrpa.com/html/ccw_cafe_s.html

Some of the restaurants listed in the Arizona link are national chains and have strong California presence.

In Southern California where I live, my kids & I will sorely miss the sweet pig pizza at BJ's that's for sure. I WILL NOT patronize any business nor support anyone who doesn't support my 2A rights. It's still my money - isn't it?

I'm checking to see if there 2 locations in Oregon have similar signs posted, if so, I will email them as well.

I don't think it should make any difference.

It is a chain. If it is within Corporate Policy to say "We Hate Niggers" at one location, I don't see any reason to give the same corporation money at another location.

Arizona Allows open carry without a permit. AZ does not allow open-carry in a place that serves alcohol. The law was changed in Sept '09 to allow concealed (permit) carry in a place that serve alcohol, although it is still illegal to consume alcohol while carrying.

All Claim Jumper had to do was . .. . . . nothing. Its still illegal to drink while armed. It is still illegal to open carry in a place that serves alcohol. But they made the overt decision to exercise their private property rights and trump what the law allows. This requires posting a specific notice in a specific locations.

While the specific posting requirements apply only to Arizona, it is the Corporate Policy that I wish to change. The way to compel a corporation to change behavior is to show them how the behavior costs them money. It is not enough to avoid these places that don't respect our right to self-defense, because the corporation has no means of associating their behavior choice with the loss of a positive reinforcement (money). That's why I wrote the letter.

I have been a small part of CJ's profits for 30 years. I stopped giving them money. Not because of the economy, not because of the demographics by the restaurant, not because their advertising was ineffective. I stopped giving them money because and only because they made a foolish business decision - a decision they can change to regain my patronage (must have a carrot with the stick).

Writing a letter is incredibly effective. Simply boycotting the place will go unnoticed, but a letter gets their attention like a slap to the side of the head.

I sent Mr. Ott a polite note saying that I would no longer patronize his restaurants (I've eaten at the one in Las Vegas), and ended the note with the following post-script:

Quote:
BTW, Search the following phrase on Google: Claim Jumper “no firearms”

You could also print out these "no guns = no money" type pics and drop one off each time you pass the restaurant:

Those should be printed on business cards and sold on all the gun boards.

Very nice - it can be improved I think by slightly rearranging it to the same same format (and image) as the official liquor department sign, which is a comped 1911 type

Did you happen to receive any type of response from the company?
