Data, no, but there is lots of history on the topic over at Gunwriters in an article titled;

HOW TO HANDLOAD SUBSONIC RIFLE CARTRIDGES
(and survive)

<http://guns.connect.fi/gow/arcane1.html>

Near the end of part 2 there is some discussion of the .308 subsonic load.

Most critical thing to understand is Secondary Explosive Effect possible with subsonic loads. I saw a nice FR7 blown apart shooting loads that sounded more like .22 shorts. Big surprise!

I've loaded some round ball subsonic loads as an experiment, and got acceptable accuracy at 25 yards, with inconsistent noise levels. (I cleaned the bore every two shots) Might try some reversed boat tail bullets next. That looks more interesting.

Good luck.

Nice article, and lots of information.

Apparentlt reloading rifle cartridges to subsonic levels seems to be a little more complicated than what I've guessed.

Anybody else ?

Here's another one. He explains more on SEE and why there isn't any real data available. Lots of safety tips.

Check out the Hodgdon website. They have 2 subsonic 308 (and 2- 223) loads that use Bullseye and Clays. I forget the loads at the moment but have them written down somewhere if you can not find them.

Also there is an article on generic loads in military rifles (that were subsonic) on SURPLUSRIFLES.COM that used Trail Boss. Pretty sure they used 308 in their testing.

After reading the linked articles and looking at my POP-gun experiment notes with the 170gr lead and 110 gr m1carbine bullet over 10gr of Unique, I can see (and would like to hear) the benefit of a subsonic. I was thinking of getting some 200gr lead before I remembered that all my twist rates are 1:12... the 170gr groups awesome at 100yds and I am sure that would suffer with the 200gr. I never thought I would even think this, but, I want an M44(unless its 1:12 also, then the 91/30'll have to do). I'll have an excuse for the bayonet with the anemic rounds! The .32 cal shouldered bullet of the soviet "hunting" ammo in the finnish story is interesting. Might have to cut a mold and try it.
