Custom K31 Sniper

All right. You all know you want to take a $100 rifle and turn it into a work of art. What I'd like to do is:

1) Take off the rear sight and replace it with a nicer one on the rear receiver bridge.
2) Put in an aftermarket trigger with a sliding side safety.
3) Put a left hand scope mount.
4) Install a McMillan A-4 black stock.

Now, that would be the cat's meow, no.

Anybody ever customize one of these?

1. It could be done

2. Have you ever looked at the trigger on these? It's already a work of art. I don't think there is and aftermarket trigger available. The trigger is very complicated and precise compared to a Mauser trigger.

3. You are going to have to make something yourself. A scout mount that replaces the rear sight is about all that's available.

4. Again, no aftermarket parts.

When I look at a Mauser, I see all kinds of possibilities. When I look at a K-31, I see a great looking rifle as is. There just aren't the parts or desire to make aftermarket parts for these.

There is dealer in Dallas that has shortened the barrels on the K31 & they look halfway decent.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't looked at the trigger yet, but can believe what you say. The trigger is great, sure, but the safety, now that leaves something to be desired.

One more thing. How about a 10 round magazine with my other wishes.

Forget the 10 rounder, where can I get a Beta mag for this?

I believe there are clamp on diopter sights, both Swiss and USA made, for the K31. There is a left side drill-and-tap mount made in the USA. Both the USA components are carried by Brownell's.

The K31 trigger is good. The safety is awkward by modern American civilian standards. Not sure there is a way around this.

Don't know about the stock.

The K31 trigger is great as is.

I put a scout mount scope mount on one of mine topped with a variable power extended eye relief scope. Does the job.
I have a 60+yr old Mosin 91/30 with a 2x pistol scope on a scout mount, it shoots 10" groups at 300yds prone(not benched), that's with Albanian surplus ammo.

Boyds makes a couple stocks. Go down 10 http://www.boydboys.com/default.htm#
Or refinish the wood with bedliner spray.

The safety is odd but then the K31 is a very unique rifle.

If you have taken down, played with, and fired one of these carbines, you already know it's a work of art! Talk about precision, fit and finish! They make most factory rifles off the shelf look like crap!

Thanks for the tips. I will get a stock from reamerrentals, and will rework the ring at the back of the firing pin. Further, a side mounted scope will be great. I don't think a rebarrel job is in order, but this will be oh-so-cool.

The St. Marie clamp-on scope mount (pic below) works well, but is offset to the right to allow for the vertical ejection. IIRC, their D&T mount is offset to the left so that is an option. This is mostly all the customizing I have ever wanted to do since the triggers are excellent as-is and I prefer wood stocks.

They also offer a Diopter rear sight using the same no drill mounting system (based on the original Swiss target sights). I have one of those also, but have not played with it very much. It's a nice setup, but I would prefer the front diopter part to made like the original instead of clamping onto the barrel.

I actually prefer shooting the military iron sights, but a scope is handy for load development and lots of folks just love the diopters.

Try LPR Gunsmithing for stocks or custom barrel work.
