Glenfield Mod 20 .22cal.

I have a Glenfield Mod. 20 .22 cal. rifle made by Marlin. My question is this thing has no serial number, anywhere. The gun has never been refinished and theres no sign of a number being removed. I think I recall reading some where that guns made prior to 1968 were not required by law to have SN's. Is this true?
If so could I stamp my own ID number on the reciver for proof of ownership?
