No Joy. With Tannerite

I aimed my 45 at it and thought I missed at 15 yds. Nope, half is spilled What am I doing wrong?

15 yds is only a runner up Darwin Award. Your bullet wasn't going fast enough you need to be closer.

Just kidding as I hope you are

Just a 1/2 lb. maybe 2 lbs and the rifle. So ya got to shoot it with a poodle shooter or something?

Takes a pretty high energy round. In spite of what .45 fans say about it, it's a pussy cat next to a centerfire rifle round.

It needs about 2500 FPS to go off. 900 FPS from a 45 doesn't cut it.

Wouldn't even be standing 15 yards from a half pounder.

Whenever I've used M80 ball (PMC new production or surplus), it wont work. usually had to have a .243 or similar to make it go boom.
75 yards is minimum for me, for 1/2 or more I prefer 100+

you need very specialized mixes at low velocity
Some are made to react to even .22lr

The original Tannerite patent is out there, real basic to home brew
basically just pure AN mixed with pyro grade 4000 mesh aluminum dust

I'm no chemist/scientist, so I searched to find out what "AN" is...
No luck.

Typo?

Kinda what I figured, friend.
But not everyone understands your abbreviations.
Ammonium Nitrate is "NH4NO3"
Not "AN"
To me "AN" is a type of a/c fitting...

And I used to think others were being too critical/judgemental of/with you...
Hmm...

I hold no patent on the term "AN"
comes years before my birth in Army TMs

this isn't University chemistry, NH4NO3 is meaningless to most folks

be that as it may

Don't be this guy! Back up from tannerite 15 yards is not enough.

You sound way too ******* stupid to be handling Tannerite.

What you are doing wrong is, 1. standing too damned close to the charge. 2. Shooting it with a .45acp(which is NOT super sonic). 3. You obviously didn't read the instructions/warnings that came with the product and are well on your way to being a statistic we all read about in the evening news.

Darwin is sitting in the shadows waiting to claim you.

I've tried Tanerite once with my FAL at a 1/2 lb at about 25 yards without luck. Had direct impact on jar without ignition.

With a Colt LE6920 at 30 yards, another 1/2 lb jar of Tanerite went off.

one can further activate these mixes by the addition of Potassium Chlorate and shit like powdered glass.

I played a bit with this shit in the 90s, ton of things you can do to further sensitize the mix.

One time a buddy and I filled a gallon milk jug with our compound folding cardboard around the jug to support a garbage bag with a few pounds of lignite coal dust. He lit it up with a 200 yard shot using his 7mm Mag, cracked his windshield. Went off like a mini nuke, small mushroom cloud with a serious blast wave. Improvised Fuel air device

Want other fun ?

Duct tape several one gallon jug of gelled up gas around a "tannerite" core then blast that at a couple hundred yards
HUGE fireball

The whole drama is stupid
You can purify fertilizer, easily make 4000 mesh aluminum, make Chlorates, etc. Real basic over the counter shit guys.

btw, it's lawful to manufacture but you need to use it within 24 hours, just like mixed Tannerite or mixed Hercules Kenepac

I've been able to set it off with M80 ball.

One thing I have found is you need to keep it packed tight in whatever plastic container you are using. If it's relatively loose with room to spare in the container it seems to have issues going off.

It's no toy, it's an explosive and you've always got to keep that in mind. It will take any debris and turn it into a projectile.

I had one friend say hey lets put some into a metal box and I'm like wut? You ever hear of a mechanical explosion? That's a like a big grenade going off, have you lost your mind? I had to set him straight on that one and make his ears burn. You don't play around with this stuff. It's fun but no toy.

Use a .300 Ultra Mag 150 grain bullet and file away the front 1/4 of the bullet making for a nice flat meplat with a real sharp edge. You'd be amazed.

Kinepac is the shit. You want more (don't we all?), mix in 10% by weight aluminum powder. Now you have something really special. NH4NO3 + nitromethane and some aluminum = shebango!

Some of you guys are way too serious. Getting called a stupid fukc is one thing. Darwin walks next to me. He says yeah it's ok. Like working in a steel mill or something. Wasn't blowing up a lawn mower. But I think launching a plastic drum would be the shit. They do that shit at the gun range in up there around north Texas

We had some 1 lb targets that the humidity had gotten to and the FALs wouldn't set them off. Only the 556 out of a Galil would light up the tainted ones. Had some good fun putting them inside a coffee can filled with non dairy creamer or with a milk jug full of gasoline on top of them and a road flare behind. Don't mess around with these fireballs if you have a lot of dry stuff around.

Don't shoot tannerite up close either. We packed a bunch of logs and old branches on top of a 10lb can and one of the heavy ends of the logs arced about 75 yards through the air and dann near landed on us.

Only when you distribute it in a cloud with an explosion

Normally the tannerite won't ignite it on its own but a road flare nearby takes care of the problem.

Add more of the AL-Zc . or just add some 800 mesh Al powder. And I havw never had an issue setting off good stuff. A bit of water in the mix, from bad storage makes it near impossible to set off. But if left long enough in that state will spontaneously deflagrate, or detonate.

Your probably right. Wife grabbed it up and left it sitting in the laundry room after I mixed it up. Thought I had the jar tight. No joy till Sunday night for the rest of it. She was being neighborly I snuck it out and capped it with the 45 last week and made hole in the jar. Marksmanship was perfect in the dark hitting the little bugger from 15 yards. No joy.

AN = acrylonitrile, a monomer used to produce acrylic polymer fibers through a polymer reaction- specifically polyacrylic nitrile fiber (PAN) used to make carbon fiber; as well as other proprietary fibers used in carpet/etc.

Take a pound of Tannerite, mix it according to the instructions on the container, place it in a clear area on the ground. Take some cardboard boxes and place/stack them around it a few yards away then back off to 100 yards and shoot the tannerite with a .223.
Go back out and then imagine the holes and tears from the rocks and the shredded container shrapnel in the cardboard being your eyes.
You seriously need to gain some respect for explosives.

Speaking of explosives I had a friend in the military who was a demolition specialist. His buddy and he had the worst thing that can happen when using explosives, the charge they set did not go off. After waiting the appropriate amount of time they walked out to find out what happened. My friend was a few paces behind his buddy and all he remembered was a big orange flash and the black silhouette of his buddy disintegrating in front of him. He and his buddy became one as pieces of his buddy ripped into his flesh. The entire front of my friends body is scared from the bone fragments with a piece of his buddy’s femur tearing into his neck almost killing him. The only thing that saved my friend was his buddy was between him and the charge taking the brunt of the blast.
