Wilson Combat Acquires McCormick Custom

Quote:
We are reliably informed that Arkansas-based Wilson Combat has acquired Chip McCormick Custom (/Shooting Star Industries) of Spicewood, TX. Since Wilson is know for its high end 1911s, and for making excellent 1911 magazines…well, it’s just a natural fit innit?

As they tell it, “This purchase solidifies Wilson Combat as the quality brand leader in 1911 handgun magazines and related product development. The new company will be known as CMC/Shooting Star Industries during the transition.”

Yup.

I refuse to purchase or use Wilson parts due to inconsistent QC / incorrect dimensions.

They must believe their own press releases.

Mmmmm I tried Chip magazines when I was shooting the IPSC circuit and the follower broke jamming the 1911. They had a kinda two piece follower that would push or break together which allowed the slide stop part of the follower slip over the slide stop at the last round. Jammed it just awfull.

Wilson's have a one piece polymer follower that it's just impossible to have that kind of jam. They are way over priced but I find them in the gun shows reasonable and in good used condition.

I own both and they both work fine- that said, I cannot help but anticipate a climb in price for CM now that WC has acquired them.

All of my 1911 mags are McCormick, and during the SOF years, Shooting Star kits in Colt mags for the .38 Super Commander.
Never had an issue, and being that SOF was a once a year, no alibi match, it matters.

Wilson poly followers chip out, failing to actuate the slide stop.

Wilson is the suckness.

Ok but when that two piece follower on the chip magazine collapses together it's near impossible to pull the mag out of the gun. You end up pulling the gun apart because there isn't enough to grab onto to get the magazine out. Have fun now and don't ever worry it could happen to you.

Look for more consolidation in the firearms industry.

Edited to add, I look at things really hard to understand why they break. At the time I was shooting a stock Colt and my game plan was never have an empty gun in the match. SS mags were 8 rounders so thinking about that added round it probably put added pressure on the follower. Plus in my mag changes I slammed them in as fast as I could. Look at the flaws in the follower you pictured, it's ready to break.

I have no reason to bs you but a good reason to want folks safe. Maybe the new mags don't break now but I don't want to find out the hard way.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND STAY SAFE.

back in the early '80's I bought 2 Wilsons, kept breaking the plastic base plates no matter how careful I was, then I purchased some Chip McCormick Shooting Stars, Wilsons went into the junk box, I beat the crap out of the shooting stars, purchased more shooting stars, purchased more shooting stars, and they all still look for more beatings

last year I found CNC cut aluminum base pads for the Wilsons, installed them and now they are at least good enough for range duty

You still can; Chip McCormick sold the trigger business off several years ago. While the triggers are still sold under the CMC name, they aren't part of the sale to Wilson. Don't cry yet...

I have 2 of the very first 2 stage triggers Chip made and with tens of thousands of rounds on them, they still kick ass. He had issues with the 2 stage and stopped producing them for awhile but the new guys have them squared away. I bought 4 10mm mags for my Delta Elite when I carried that on duty and right out of the box, I had issues. One wouldn't feed at ALL and the others were, well, just not as good as I had been led to believe. I called CMC and got some satisfaction but it left an ugly taste in my mouth.
